| I'm a diehard fan of classic Maiden. Number to Seventh Son are all great, Powerslave being a masterpiece. But since then it feels as if they're just repeating themselves. That Garick guy adds nothing other than to clutter the sound and cover Harris's bass.
Listen to a recent album, then put on "Piece of Mind." That album is a bass tour d force. And the SOUND! Harsh, midrange and WAY up front. I love it. It's gone now.
There are a few moments on the new album that are interesting but the songs in general are missing the melodic component of past work. There's nothing memorable. The "hooks" are weak. And frankly, even Dickenson (who's now in his 50's) seems to be having difficulty withe the upper register. (Keeping in mind, it's always been insanely high.) Lowering the keys just wouldn't cut it. (Maybe they can at least tune down?)
If you're a diehard fan, you may like the new album. But for anyone who wants to explore the brilliance of Maiden and especially Steve Harris's best work, this isn't the place to find it. |
