Old School Rap with some good bass

Sign in to disble this ad
Battle of the Bands is coming up at my school. My drummer, guitarist and I want to play some rap at the show, we've got our janitor to agree to rap for us. Look he's on youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZmWJMHf5HTc. I think it would be a fun show, everyone at school knows who J Hollow is, I think it would be really entertaining.

I don't get into rap very much, but I've heard some old school rap that one my friends listen's to, and I kinda like it. I'm looking for some old school rap with some cool basslines. We have to do a cover and an original song. I'm thinking Rapper's Delight for the cover, and I want some songs to listen to so I've got some inspiration for a rap beat that we can have him freestyle over.

Any suggestions?

Check out the Brand New Heavies' album The Heavy Rhyme Experience or "Verses from the Abstract" on Tribe Called Quest's album The Low End Theory. Ron Carter on the bass on that tune. You might also want to check out The Roots. I've seen them play the main groove from "Hand Clapping Song" by the Meters.

Big Daddy Kane's 'Another Victory' has a cool bassline. Old school rap ----booyyeeee!

Also, a classic: The Humpty Dance by Digital Underground. Not much of a bass line, but it is a blast if you have a five string and a octave pedal or synth pedal.

Party and ******** by Notorious B.I.G. (Ratatat Remix) is a very fun song to play on bass,

or even try putting some bass to Real Thugs by Eazy-E or something like that.

Good Rap

A Tribe Called Quest's "Low End Theory" album and Beastie Boys' "Check Your Head" album are two amazing albums with real FAT bass lines. Some are legendary. Many good classics there for you.

Peace,

B

Listen to some old Sugar Hill Records stuff with Doug Wimbish on bass. Also, the bass line from Taana Gardner's "Heartbeat" is great for rhyming over, as is the line from Cymande's "The Message".
