This track has a seriously airtight groove. I loved it back in my youth.

Didn't Byron Miller play on George Duke's "Reach For It" also? I know he played on Herbie Hancock's "I Thought It Was You". Both seriously funky...but I always found Byron's tone a bit too nasal, not enough bottom. But yah, stanky groove.

Yep. That whole solo was based on an extended blues scale. One of the greatest funk solos ever! As for the nasally comment, so did I.

IMO Byron Miller is a very overlooked bass player and one of the players that I find inspiring especially when he solos.

I still go back to the George Duke/ Byron Miller recordings all the time, his feel spoke to me in the 70's, and still does.
I also dug Byron's work with Flora Purim when Duke was producing her.

I saw Byron back in the late 70's with the Crusaders. The lineup also included Airto, and Phil Upchirch. Awesome show.

I agree with you on Reach for it, it used to be one of my favorite albums back when I had it on Vinyl, along with Brazilian Love Affair.

I Love the Blues she heard my cry

I just recently re-acquired and finished listening to this album on MP3 after having it on vinyl during high school and college. Definitely one of Dukes finest works. (and he has done a lot. You can hear the quite heavy FZ influence hear with several members of the mothers aboard on this endevour.

Just some of the Musicians on this album included: Johnny "Guitar" Watson (vocals, guitar); Flora Purim (vocals); Daryl Stuermer, Lee Ritenour (guitars); Airto Moreira (berimbau, tambourine, percussion); John Wittenberg (violin); Bruce Fowler (trombone); Ruth Underwood (marimba, percussion, gong); Tom Fowler, Byron Miller (bass); Leon "Ndugu" Chancler (drums, gong, background vocals); and others still.

Here's a taste;
