Us old guys often seem to comment on how music is driven by genre and hype now and as a result the major companies always seem to play safe by sticking to the formula for whatever is currently fashionable. The opportunity for us to publish our own stuff means there’s still a lot of stuff out there that’s fresh and original, but the fact remains that at one time you used to have quite a few “ahead of their times” gems getting into the mainstream charts and I do think this is perhaps more difficult for inventive newer bands today than it used to be. So, to celebrate some musical oddballs of yesteryear, and maybe give some younger TBers the chance to hear some stuff they might have missed as it gets less airplay than other stuff from way back, I’m posting this thread.
If you like any of the stuff that you can stream from here, I'm sure most of it will be found on iTunes or whatever your regular online store of choice may be. Let’s kick off with this from 1974. Sparks – these guys were WAY ahead of their time.
Okay, let's hear some of yours. I may add a few more as we go along if things get interesting. RULES (made to be broken, of course) - it needs to be odd enough to be a little different to the mainstream of the time, and it needs to have been a hit of some sort. Let's see if this turns out to be fun.

Of course, to my mind, the song is definitely a hit. |
