Oldie hits that would never see the light of day in these times...

Us old guys often seem to comment on how music is driven by genre and hype now and as a result the major companies always seem to play safe by sticking to the formula for whatever is currently fashionable. The opportunity for us to publish our own stuff means there’s still a lot of stuff out there that’s fresh and original, but the fact remains that at one time you used to have quite a few “ahead of their times” gems getting into the mainstream charts and I do think this is perhaps more difficult for inventive newer bands today than it used to be. So, to celebrate some musical oddballs of yesteryear, and maybe give some younger TBers the chance to hear some stuff they might have missed as it gets less airplay than other stuff from way back, I’m posting this thread.

If you like any of the stuff that you can stream from here, I'm sure most of it will be found on iTunes or whatever your regular online store of choice may be.

Let’s kick off with this from 1974. Sparks – these guys were WAY ahead of their time.

Okay, let's hear some of yours. I may add a few more as we go along if things get interesting. RULES (made to be broken, of course) - it needs to be odd enough to be a little different to the mainstream of the time, and it needs to have been a hit of some sort. Let's see if this turns out to be fun.

That track (like almost anything by Zappa) could be considered way ahead of its time, for sure. But was it a hit?

"Roundabout" I'd venture to say,but that's probably a pretty obvious one.

Yeah, I'll agree on that one. Definitely the right side of the curve (especially when you listen to the bass track).

On the other hand, check this out. It was really a hit when it came out...

I don't have the chart information at my fingertips, but I believe it (along with trouble every day) were released as a single.

Of course, to my mind, the song is definitely a hit.

Wow, I'm amazed. The only Zappa track I remember being released as a single over here was "Dancing Fool" (another classic ).

I was recently listening to Blood Sweat & Tears and thinking how their hits would never make the radio today, and they were a huge radio hit.

I don't know if this song was ever a hit in Europe. It was not in the U.S. but it sure got some attention for being very different.

pretty much anything done by any artist who is not beautiful or interesting to look at. Marketability is about image and looks, not songwriting or musicianship. Replace Bob Dylan with Justin Bieber. Replace Mama Cass with Lady Gaga. MTV ruined good music...

Murray Saul used this one to kick off the weekend every Friday night for years on WMMS in Cleveland. He may have used the Bowie version though, can't recall. It was the 70's after all.
