How does he get such a Ric-like tone out of (what looks like) a J-bass?

That's a Roscoe Beck bass. Can't see his amp/effects rig, in this vid, but other vids from Bubble Bath show that it's a SVT-->'fridge. The Gentle Giant live version of "Free Hand" features the good ol' P-bass-->SVT-->'fridge, and has a similar tone. Bubble Bath is the kind of band I want to be in, before I retire from playing. They have great cover vids of "Heart of the Sunrise," and "Thick as a Brick" (the latter which doth not contain the lovely hot singerbabe), on YouTube. Their FB page shows them to be a classic-era prog-rock cover band, although much of it is in Hebrew.
