One Better by Les Claypool?

I've noticed that I never hear anybody mention the song One Better by Les Claypool. This was the song that got me hooked on Les and led me to his other solo work and Primus. It has a damn good bit of funkyness that ive been trying to imitate for a long time. What do you all think of this song....good...bad?

I like this one. Claypool was a bass hero of mine when I was in my teens during the early Primus era. Generally speaking, I haven't been all that impressed with most of his stuff since Primus' Pork Soda. A lot of it sounds more like wanking rather than a well put together song. Occasionally he still puts out a good one, though. In my mind he'll never top the early Primus stuff like Suck on This, Frizzle Fry, Sailing the Seas of Cheese, and Pork Soda. All in all I still have a lot of respect for Les' originality. He's a pretty decent player too...

Great! he has his moments where his songs are great, and the songs have great bass but the songs themselves are iffy. the rest of whales and woe, fit that description of some songs good some iffy.

It's a fav of mine from Of Whales and Woe... but I've been listening to Les for just shy of 20 years now. Same shtick as it ever was.

here is what got me into them... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UeJgvYX-LFY

The older albums definitely have a special sound to them. The only Claypool project I never got into was CCBBB. I've loved everything else that I can think of. Old school Primus is definitely my favorite though.

I like "of whales and woe". Fillipino Ray and Phantom Patriot are really good too, IMO.

And this solo in the live version of One Better is my favorite bass clip ever. Some people go crazy over Wooten and Jaco, but this clip is what does it for me. It's a bit of a hodge podge of original and cover material from what I've read. You can hear him go back into "one better" at the end...
