"One More Robot" Bass Tone?

Sign in to disble this ad
I was listening to the Flaming Lip's "Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots" yesterday, and found myself wondering yet again about how on earth they got the bass to sound like it does on "One More Robot/Sympathy 3000-21." (According to my drummer, at least, it sounds like "pure sex", haha) I know Michael Ivins usually uses a P-Bass (to the best of my knowledge), but that's about it.

It could just be a synth part, but I sort of question whether it's a synth when Bright Eyes got a pretty convincing knock off of the same tone on the song "Theme from Pinata" that was on the "Digital Ash" album.

Anyone have any idea about how they pull that tone off in the studio?
