IMO, Lamont Johnson is really an unsung master. I consider him, along with Michael Henderson, Fernaundo Saunders, and Ralphe Armstrong, to be Detroit's "fretless funk mob" from back in the 1970s.

I agree.
You ever hear his first solo record? |

This is probably the song featuring Lamont Johnson that the most old heads heard. This is the original, not to be confused with Sylvester's or anyone elses versions!
Listen for the subtle fretless touches on a smokin' Disco bassline!

Lots of folks didn't realize this cat was a student of the bass and could hang with anyone back then! Truly ahead of his time! Would love to hear him hittin' on some jazz! Excellent vocalist as well. |

Yes he did.
I recently spoke with Deon. And he told me that he will be re releasing his 1988 hit "Heaven Help Me".

Jauqo - didn't he play with Marvin Gaye at one point?

When I was I kid I heard a few of those guys jamming at the music stores and I had no idea how good these guys were. I remember running into this one player at Wonderland Music on Greenfield (I could walk there) and I was in like 8th grade. I heard this guy just exploding on the bass and I listened to him for about an hour. After he left I was like "who was that guy?". And the salesman's like that's Michael Henderson dude. Ralphe Armstrong still plays around town quite a bit.
