Dream Theater turned out to be a disappointment but the new Opeth record "Heritage" is one of the coolest things I've heard this year.
It reminds me of a Deep Purple album for some reason. Opeth - The Devil's Orchard - YouTube

Thoughts? | Yeah, I love the new album. Opeth has so many sounds, all of them equally amazing, and this one is completely new for them. Kinda like Watershed meets 70s prog rock. They're currently on tour as well; already have my tickets for the show in October in Austin.

I just downloaded this album on I-tunes, and the bass work is subtle round and very full. Though it's not as in your face as some of what Mendez has done before.. Man it's really some great bass playing, in that it does what the song calls for quite well and doesn't over do it.

Not because Opeth did something different - I encourage that - But because its just very boring, start/stoppy and... well... boring. That being said, the musicianship is incredible and very tight. Maybe if i liked Jazzier stuff more i'd be into it.

| Agreed & I like Screaming but this is a mature effort that does not rely on the screaming growling crutch.
So far it sounds great. Seems to be causing a great division among their fans. |

~ Todd | Agreed. "Haxprocess" in particular has some pretty sweet bass playing. I think this album overall features the bass more than any of the prior albums.

Johan DeFarfalla did some great fretless on there. A very dark and melancholy album.. to me, not necessarily better than Heritage.. but different and Great! I'm glad to have it in my collection. I am really psyched for the Oct. 1st Concert at Orlando House of Blues.

I'm glad to have it in my collection. | I hear you, the first incarnation of Opeth with De Farfalla on fretless bass and Nordin on drums is my favourite, and Morningrise is one of the albums I like most ever (the opener, Advent, is simply amazing). The rhythm section had a very jazzy feeling and really made a difference.
They remained a top notch band also after the first line-up changes, though.
I've listened a few times to Heritage and I'm really digging it, practically no metal, a nice mix of prog, jazz and doom, some parts remind me of Deep Purple too, mixed with a bit of Black Sabbath in the heaviest ones...
It is a bir start/stoppy, yes! But i kinda like it.
And finally we can hear Lopez in the mix, with some nice lines. I think he's a great player but on the previous records you can't really hear it most of the time... but watch him play live, and you'll see... |

To Bid You Farewell (Morningrise)
Face of Melinda (Still Life)
Harvest (Blackwater Park)
Windowpane (Damnation)
Death Whispered A Lullabye (Damnation)
Hope Leaves (Damnation)
Hours of Wealth (Ghost Reveries)
Isolation Years (Ghost Reveries)
Burden (Watershed)
Hex Omega (Watershed)
Also: Heritage is freaky and awesome. Digging the hell out of it. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
