Check out Ray Brown's later, more recent, trio albums. They aren't the OP group but it's Ray doing his thing with many other great players, and they won't take you too far out from the original vibe. Also, you can expand your OP Trio collection with recordings like "Live at the Stratford Shakespeare Festival" and "We Get Requests", and don't forget to check out youtube for some awesome live videos from the 70s.

As for other great piano trios that you should check out. Well, there are tons.

I'll be sure to check them out, man. Thanks for the recommendations.

More help from other TB-ers is gladly appreciated. Haha

My Dad's good buddy Ray Price was the drummer with the Oscar Peterson trio for a couple of albums. Check out Walking The Line and Another Day. Nice jazz.

Oscar was one of the real greats of piano. Whenever I see Ray I always mean to ask about what it was like to work with such an influential musician and then the conversation goes other ways. I'll send him an email to get some comments and then post them here.

OP never had Bass Guitar - it was Double Bass all the way! You will get more reliable info on the DB side, which is probably where this thread should be..?

Although I should point out there's nothing unreliable about my post - it's 100% solid gold, as always.

Another trio you might want to check out is pianist Tete Montoliu's group with Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen on bass & Albert "Tootie" Heath on drums - these boys COOK!!!

A good one to start with is the album "Catalonian Fire"...

A few I'd recommend are:

Nigerian Marketplace: With bassist Nils Hemming Olmstead Pederson, This quartet cooks, one of the funkiest acoustic rhythm sections I've ever heard with Ulf Walkiness on Guitar and drummer Terry Clarke. One of my favorite all time Jazz albums

Night Train: Is considered by many the finest recording of one of the finest Jazz bassist ever Ray Brown.

Live at the Blue Note: With Ray Brown, Herb Ellis and Bobby Durham

At Newport Live: With Philly Joe Jones, Sonny Stitt, and Roy Elderidge

And their are probably to many others to mention, but these are a great start.

IMO, the best 'if I was only going to buy one Oscar Peterson CD' is 'Exclusively for my Friends'. It's a great 2 disc collection of solo and trio live performances of Oscar smokin' through a lot of classic standards. Very good!

There is a DVD with Peterson having both Ray Brown and Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen on bass from the Montreaux Festival. They switch off and on during tunes.

Well - in the DB community you will find Jazz pros who can give you a lot of info and some who may have played with or met the man himself!

The OP plays cole porter album is just incredible; it's right up there with Night Train. Whenever someone is looking to define swing, these two albums should be the definition.

The trio is great, great album. Another trio I am found of is Brad Mehldau with Larry Grenedier on bass.
