Oteil Burbridge

Sign in to disble this ad
On my never ending quest for funky bassplaying, NJL (our own TB fat karate kid wannabe ) advised me some Oteil Burbridge. Now, what are the things that absolutely recomended ? He only has a few solo albums, so it seems.

Thanks!

If you can, as well as getting his solo albums with the Peacemakers, look up Victor Wooten's Bass Day '98 DVD and Bill Dickens' "Collection" DVD. The Victor Wooten DVD feautres Oteil jamming with Victor over "The Red Baron". Very good.

Even better is the snippet from the Bill Dickens DVD. It's oteil with Dave Pomeroy backing him on fretless. Amaing duet from those two. While both solos aren't huge, the DVD's themselves are also amazing.

Other than that, Aquarium Rescue Unit?

In A Perfect World and Mirrors of Embarrassment are the studio discs I've got; the first ARU disc was a live show and really smokin' as well.

If you can get your hands on "Instrumental Illness" track off of the Allman Brothers "Hittin the Note" CD, that one is sure to blow your mind. Even better live...

That first live Aquarium Rescue Unit album is a real burner! I still remember when I first heard that and the first time I saw Oteil's name.......16 years later I still pick up almost everything Oteil plays on, the guy just is music!

"Time Is Real"!

Personally, I dig Oteil best in a band situation...the ARU albums, Allman Brothers (especially "Instrumental Illness"), Frogwings.
I'm not so crazy about Vida Blue, however.
He has a nice chordal piece on the recent Jaco Big band thing("Three Views Of a Secret").

Of his solo albums, the debut is the one I prefer.

Frogwings is a great CD to play for guitar buddies too, Jimmy Herring and Derek Trucks really push each other.

Oteil was the bassist is a good friend of mine's '80s Top-40 band...he has some video of that band (on Beta-Max...ugh) & I'm pleading with him to do something with so he can post it on youtube.

OK, it was just '80s Top-40...still, you can see/hear the greatness. Something I'm not hearing from the Rock Star: INXS/Super Nova cover band that seems to get a lotta accolades aroung here.

ARU's "In a Perfect World" is a must. Oteil, Jimmy Herring and Paul Henson are a perfect match. I saw Otiel a few months ago touring for his "Believer" CD. Great show and a great player. One of my favorite players. He signed the back of a headstock for a customer's bass that was ready to ship.

If you can, buy or rent the Bass Day 98 DVD. His playing (together with the other bass heroes on that video) is amazing.

Jeff Sipe you say? I love him, I'll have to check this out, I'll admit that while Oteil is no Jonas Hellborg, it should be neat to see what those two can do together!

FWIW, I'll take Oteil over Hellborg...just one man's opinion.

Yeah, that Apt. Q258 guy is pretty good. "The Calling" is also a decent album. Some of the acoustic folky stuff isn't my cup of tea, but I like the album as a whole.

Great Oteil recommendations. He is definitely one of my favorite bass players of all time, if not #1!
Bud, how was Oteil's show? I've never seen him live, except when he sat in with Wooten's band in '03ish. Don't exactly remember how long ago that was. And the Allman's Live at the Beacon DVD doesn't really count. Either way, I'm stoked that he's coming to town in just over a month. Can't wait!

Not a typical recording, but if you get BETJ over there, there's an episode of Studio Jams that he plays on (along with his brother) that has his best (to me) playing on it. From the things I've heard, I dig the tone of his Fodera much better than his Moduli.

Oh, and maybe this is just me, but does anyone else sometimes wish they'd cut the sound on his mike so you can hear his solos without the scat on top of them?
