The difference is subtle, but it's there.

That bass line from NWA's Express Yourself is sampled from Charlies Wright and the Watts 103rd Street Band. Good stuff for sure.

Off the top of my head:

"September" and "Shining Star" by Earth, Wind & Fire.
"Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin)" and "if You Want Me to Stay" by Sly and the Family Stone
"Flashlight" and "Aqua Boogie" by Parliament
And, of course, "Jungle Boogie" by Kool & the Gang

When that Diana Ross album came out I immediately gravitated towards Bernard's basslines...they were the coolest sounds coming out of the radio. Add "Upside Down" to that list, that is a nasty bassline!

This thread is awesome. These are some great, addictive funky bass lines. Here are some that come to my mind.

"Wordy Rappinghood" by Tom Tom Club.
"Billie Jean" by M.J.
"Watermelon Man" by Herbie Hancock.
"Come As You Are" by Nirvana. Yeah, I know it's not exactly funk, but it sure is addictive.
Pretty much everything by Talking Heads. Some of my favorites are "Psycho Killer," "This Must Be the Place," "I Zimbra," and "Uh Oh, Love Comes to Town."

not exactly funk, but basslines you can't stop playing once you've learned them?

how about "summertime rolls" by jane's addiction?

"the national anthem" by radiohead

tons of good Cure lines; "love cats"

"fascination street"

Perhaps the granddaddy of them all:

"Hollywood Swinging" - Kool & the Gang

So simple, yet soooo funky!
