"out-upright an upright"

Sign in to disble this ad
the other night, a self-proclamed upright purist (sax player) in a recording sessions admitted to me that my electric basses were "more upright sounding than an upright." i was playing with my bridge pickup soloed (back off a little bit from full volume, for punch) and plucking up on the fingerboard, one tune on fretless the other on fretted, roundwound strings.

i will admit, they did sound especially good on those tracks.

does anyone know of other recordings where the electric bass does a better acoustic bass sound than a regular doublebass?

i'll post these tracks if they ever get sent to me. anyone know of other good examples of this type of thing? i think i recall hearing anthony jackson pull it off better than i ever could..

hopefully nobody from the DB side of TB sees this

Hmmmm...don't know. I have heard a Guild Ashbory bass mimic an URB pretty good.

FWIW, Jeff Berlin & Jimmy Haslip are adept at making a fretted EB sound like a fretless EB.

used to have an ashbory.. they really did sound pretty nice, but too "electric upright" sounding, or overly-piezo for me.. and damn those breaking strings..
