Recorded that tune yesterday. I did the mixing myself, so the bass is way up front.
Classic P bass + flats tone, and a woeful attempt by me to cop Jamerson's style.
This recording is the first time I played that song. So it's sloppy in parts.
Enjoy!

I've got a Highway One P with SPB-3s, strung with Rotosound SwingBass 66s, and I cannot get a good Motown out of it, even with reasonable EQ changes at the amp. I'm switching (back) to flats! I'll probably end up with the 760fl LaBellas that I started with, but I have a set of Rotosound 77s now, and am about to try some DR Hi-Beam flats and some Sadowsky Black Label flats. From what I'm hearing, though, the Sadowskys may be what you want, too. Flat with a bright edge, or some such. I'll try to remember to post here once I have them on.

Vintage-spec P pickup
Broken-in flats
Foam mute or palm mute
Hours and hours of practice

Hours and hours of practice | I do a fair amount of palm muting. I am very experienced playing the genre though. It's more so in your hands, IMO. And don't forget, recording techniques were so far off from todays techiniques and tools. Once I get this thing to my liking I'll post a clip. |

Then again, my 760FL strings are still brand new.

Its voiced nowhere near vintage that gives you that tone youre looking for. the SPB-1 or SPB-2 will be much friendlier.
