P basses in Death Metal?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey guys, as some of you may have seen, I play in a melodic death metal band and it's my passion. Recently though I have been shifting preference when practicing by myself from the sound of a J to the sound of a P.

Does anyone know of any death metal bassists that use a P bass in their music? I'm interested to see how they mix the unique and very recognizable sound of a P bass into a genre that is predominantly dominated by spectors and J's.

Thanks in advance!

I think cryptopsy's old stuff was with a P, bad tone though IMO. Apart from that I can't really think of anyone off hand.

Me. i use my Greco Studio P in some tunes of my band. The bass sound huge and cut thru the mix very well in live gig P bass feat Ampeg SVT Pro-4. You never go wrong with that set up, brutality tone \m/

Alex Webster used a P on "Eaten Back To Life" and "Butchered At Birtch".

is there even a "standard" kinda bass for death metal? I think every DM band I've seen uses a different kind...

I see Ibanez getting used a bit. But there isn't really a standard.

Maybe standard isn't the best word for it, all I know is I don't see P's in Death Metal as much as I see, say, J's or Spectors. Ibanez and ESP seem to get a good workout too in some metal bands.

Mr. Typhus that's an awesome performance, I couldn't make out a whole lot of anything because of the quality, but from what I heard of the bass it definitely fit the music and sounded brutal!

Probably because P's have a big neck, and slim necks are better for going fast.
