Sign in to disble this ad
What type of music did you listen to growing up??Same as your parents??
Did your parents/guardians play an instrument??
What type of music was your parents/guardians listening to when you was but a youngster, running around picking your nose and peeing your pants??

Growing up was a GREAT TIME in my house.I remember my mom cleaning house,with her Fischer(Fisher?) component floor-model stereo stereo C-R-A-N-K-E-D to about 7 or 8(hey,what can I say?She didn't like the sound to get all distorted!HEY!THAT'S where I got my good ear from!!),listening to CCR,3Dog Night,Sabbath,Jim Croce(great stuff,give it a whirl),Neil Diamond.Yes,I say it w/out shame.I love Neil!!GREAT vocalist/songwriter.Actually,some of his tunes ROCKED!!Not in a Sabbath way,but still.......

Oh, yeah,Kenny Rogers & the 5th Dimension.Hey,Big Kenny wielded a mean-ass Tele Bass!!Nice lines,while singing,too,I might add.

no - dad was oldies (50s and 60s), mom was country adult contemporary and pop

I was always into rock. I did the metal thing for a short time, but mostly harder mainstream alt rock (I know, mainstream and alternative)

Being that my sisters were 12 and 13 years older than I,I grew up more on their music.

Mom is/was a classical piano teacher so I got a good dose of that as well.

As far as I can tell,my father stopped listening to music after WWII.The only time I connected with him musically was after I got into the blues scene.I brought home a Louis Jordan cd and he actually told me to turn UP the music for the first time!

Now that I'm getting a bit older,Mom's music is creeping back into my listening habits.Beethoven's 9th FTW!

Yep. I listen to everything my dad listens to. I listened to RHCP in the womb, instead of Bach or Beethoven.

His favorite bands:
RHCP
Black Keys
Incubus
Led Zeppelin
Muse
DMB

My favorite bands:
RHCP
Black Keys
Incubus
Led Zeppelin
Muse
DMB

(no specific order, of course)

But I have also gotten him into, Victor, Tal, SMV, Jaco, etc.

Well, mean-ass is in the eye of the beholder, but yes, he's sure about that:

And my parents used to listen to godawful white bread music from the 40's. So no, we had no common ground, with the possible exception of Elvis.

My dad left my mom before I was born and moved to Stockholm and got married but he's an okay guy and has influenced my taste in music somewhat. He taught me to respect all music and don't judge by genre. He also plays trumpet.

My mom likes music but she's not very musical. There was no music around when I was growing up because I hated it, I wanted it to be quiet.

Mine never liked anything besides instrumental music. So when I played piano, they liked that.

As soon as I started playing guitar, then bass at 13, they hated it. In fact, 25 years later, they still haven't seem me play bass at church, and they are "church" people. We're pretty loud and rock, but still.

Neither of my parents play an instrument or are particularly musical. Either of them might occasionally play a record on the stereo from among their limited collection. They both seemed to like the same music and they often played The Kingston Trio, Barbara Streisand, Simon and Garfunkel, The Chad Mitchell Trio, Abba, John Denver, Neil Diamond and Peter, Paul and Mary.

Dad also liked classical music but he had a limited collection of that so I heard Beethoven's 5th and 9th Symphonies an awful lot as well as a few that he liked to play over and over again like Holst's The Planets and Vivaldi's The Four Seasons.

The first and only musical instrument I ever seriously attempted to play was the electric bass and I didn't pick that up until I was 19 years old and had moved out of their house.

For some reason, Holst's The Planets is among my most favorite of all music to listen to and I never get tired of hearing it.

Same here...Santana, Sly & The Family Stone, The Beatles, Motown, Stax, The Doors, The Carpenters, etc. Whatever AM station my parents played in those Ramblers worked for me.
...it also helped having a Jazz-playing uncle & hipper/older cousins in south Philly.

Are you talking about Kenny Rogers & the First Edition?
...in any event, the 5th Dimension is cool.

I grew up listening to my mom (Beatles, Motown, funk) and stepfather's (Allman Bros, Zeppelin) record collections. My stepfather played bass and flattop guitar, mostly country and bluegrass with his family. I wanted to play guitar like Eddie Van Halen, so I stupidly ignored the opportunity to learn from him. It was much later in life that I realized I was a bass player in my soul.

I like most things my dad likes. He's into a lot of newer alt-rock stuff as well as old rock.

My parents found religion when I was 5, and any "contemporary" music was quickly taboo. My babysitter wasn't even allowed to bring her John Denver records.

I have nothing against you P&W folks, but that is the only music I heard for 8 years. Then I rebelled...

We had a major rift in our house. Mom was a rock & roller. She loved most of the new stuff. She also would play traditional Italian songs and listen to hard travelled country (Pharon Young, Johnny Cash, and the Lousianna Hayride)...
Dad loves Long hair stuff (Bach, Brahms and such) but would just kick out to real jazz (Count Bassie Glen Miller) Big Band things, but also loved contemporary country...
I was hit with all kinds of music growning up. I did not know my dad played harmonica until this year. I guess he was really good at it too... Still never heard him play.

runs in the blood . . .

Mom sang, dad played keys and sang in a band in the '60s (still has that old Farfisa sitting the basement! (with GREAT cigarette burns in some of the keys!)) - he listened to Pink Floyd, Doors, John Mayall, Cream (gotta give him credit, he learned over the years to appreciate good contemporary music as well), oldest brother - guitar (Led Zep, Aerosmith, Jeff Beck), next brother - Drums (Led Zep, Little Feat, Rush, Depeche Mode (OOPS!), Yes), Myself - influenced by older brothers + father's tastes (Level 42, Jaco, James Jamerson, Flea), youngest brother (drums) - (Grateful Dead, Dave Matthews, Stevie Gadd). Get togethers still center around family-jams (and I'm 38 now). Good post - thanks for stirring some great memories!

Dad was really into the Allman Brothers, James Gang, CCR, Sabbath, and so on. He was also into some serious funk. I didn't like any of it growing up. I fell into the metal scene pretty early. I snuck out of the house to see Judas Preist play in Philly when I was 14. I got caught but it was worth it.

I am 36 now. I am really into the Allmans, Gov't Mule, jam bands and so on. It just took a few years to catch up with me.

My nine year old daughter plays drums. She is a big Rush fan like her Dad, has a RUSH banner behind her kit and knows all the words to "By-Tor And The Snow Dog". We were at a concert on the Fourth Of July watching Foghat and The Marshall Tucker Band. During one song there was a guitar solo wailing and I look down and my daughter is banging her head with the "Dio Devil Horns" out.

It brought a tear to my eye.

My dad listened to the beatles and motown. I listen to progressive metal and stoner/doom. But then again my parents used to take my CDs because it was "the devil's music" which ended up backfiringa little. Neither of them played instruments but my extended family has a lot of people that play bagpipes.

Absolutely. Both my parents came of age in England at the end of the sixties, so I've been listening to stellar music since I was born.
