Paul Jackson's tone on Flood

Sign in to disble this ad
I think that may be my favorite tone. Paul is one of my favorite players and my main influence on electric. His style is completely fresh and original --- actually, it is timeless. It is so raw and powerful, yet absoultely presice and articulate. He is often imitated, but his feel can never be duplicated.

Anyway, I know that owning his equipment would never make me sound like him, nor do I want to for that matter--but I was wondering if anyone knew what he is using on the Flood record. From the pic inside it looks like a 70's P bass with maple board. But what about amplification?

(Please spare me the 'don't worry what he uses and play what you like' replies. This thread isn't about me trying to sound like PJ. It's just out of curiosity.)

Good question. He does tend to roll off the bass to get that lean meaty tone he was known for, which I love

Saw him live with Headhunters back in the day.

He was definitely using a maple-fingerboard P-bass with flats.

Can't definitely recall his amp, but I seem to remember Bose speakers onstage.

He along with drummer Mike Clark blew me away!!!

Anyone else remember when Bose 802's with a Walter Woods head was considered the hip Mini Rig Of Doom for electric & acoustic bassists? I saw a lot of guys in the late '70s sporting that combo, but I never tried it myself.

I dont know about the flats though cause there in an interview

with Paul Jackson on bassplayer.tv where he says he hates the

sound of flats.

and +10000000000000000000000000000 about Mike Clark.

THey two of them are probably one of the best rhythm sections.

Was listening to Flood the other day -- great cd. Jackson had more to do with getting me into bass than any other bassist. Sorry, I can't answer your question.

Re: PJ's use of flats -

I can definitely say "flats" as I was sitting in this very small club no more than 2 feet away from him; I was using Roto RS66 roundwounds at the time and I could definitely tell the difference visually.

This was in '75, and his comments on bassplayer.tv are quite recent - undoubtedly/apparently, PJ has grown to dislike flats over the years.

Wasn't Flood recorded in Japan? I don't recall...if so, I would think he used whatever was available/provided.

Not sure if this was posted or not, but even if it was, definitely worth a second look!

Some nice shots of said maple board P-Bass, too. Can't tell what strings he has on there, though...

Enjoy!

Congrats...IIRC, that Headhunters' video link was (possibly) the very 1st youtube link posted here at Talk Bass. This was back when youtube was in its infancy.
I remember I was still on Dial-Up & it was a real pain in the ass when I tried to view it.
