Paul McCartney Tuning

Been hearing that Paul McCartney used to purposely tune his Bass slightly out of tune. The only thing I could find searching online was a casual mention that he would tune his A-string slightly flat by a musician who played on his first recordings after The Beatles. Anybody have any specifics?

Not 100 percent sure, but I thought it was John that detuned his guitar slightly so you could here him clearly on the recordings.

I'm guessing, but it may be that his nut slot was out. I had that problem for a short while on one of my basses, and had to tune the open string slightly flat for the fretted notes to be in tune.
