"Perfect" records. How about "perfect" homemade compilations?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi everybody.

Inspired by my friend Bassybill's "Perfect" records thread, I thought about this: Let's say that you want to give your best friend a compilation of the tunes that best represent your tastes. Since it would be a huge list for a true music lover (as all of us here are, I think), there are two restrictions: You must try to fill just two audio (no data) CDs (no more than 160 minutes of music) and you must include no more than one track from any of the artists of your preference. Of course, you can choose any genre(s) for your compilation. I only put rock tunes in mine just for homogeneity's sake:

CD1:

1. Welcome To The Jungle (From Guns N' Roses' "Appetite For Destruction" - 4:36)
2. Back In Black (From AC/DC's "Back In Black" - 4:17)
3. Whole Lotta Love (From Led Zeppelin's "II" - 5:36)
4. Time (From Pink Floyd's "The Dark Side Of The Moon" - 7:06)
5. Are You Gonna Go My Way? (From Lenny Kravitz' "Are You Gonna Go My Way?" - 3:33)
6. Cupid's Dead (From Extreme's "III Sides To Every Story" - 5:58)
7. Elephant Talk (From King Crimson's "Discipline" - 4:44)
8. In Memory of Elizabeth Reed (From The Allman's Brothers Band's "Live At Fillmore East" - 13:09)
9. Ace of Spades - (From Motörhead's "Ace Of Spades" - 2:53)
10. Catholic Girls - (From Frank Zappa's "Joe's Garage" - 4:21)
11. Rosanna (From Toto's "IV" - 5:35)
12. Crazy Train (From Ozzy Osbourne's "Blizzard Of Ozz" - 4:53)
13. Bohemian Rhapsody (From Queen's "A Night At The Opera" - 6:00)
14. Highway Star (Live version from Deep Purple's "Made In Japan" - 6:45)

TOTAL RUNNING TIME: 79:26

CD2:

1. More Than A Feeling (From Boston's self-titled album - 4:47)
2. Smells Like Teen Spirit (From Nirvana's "Nevermind" - 5:03)
3. Money For Nothing (From Dire Straits' "Brothers In Arms" - 8:26)
4. Hey Joe (From The Jimi Hendrix Experience's first single - 3:27)
5. La Villa Strangiato (From Rush's "Hemispheres" - 9:36)
6. Poison (From Alice Cooper's "Trash" - 4:29)
7. Schism (From Tool's "Lateralus" - 6:49)
8. Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love - (From Van Halen's self-titled album - 3:51)
9. War Pigs (From Black Sabbath's "Paranoid" - 8:00)
10. The Number Of The Beast (From Iron Maiden's "The Number Of The Beast" - 4:52)
11. Heart Of The Sunrise (From Yes' "Fragile" - 11:26)
12. Goin' Blind (Live version from Kiss' "MTV Unplugged" - 3:39)
13. Sweating Bullets (Remastered -slightly longer- version from Megadeth's "Countdown To Extinction" - 5:29)

TOTAL RUNNING TIME: 79:54

Running time for each track is two seconds longer than actual since it's a common practice to leave a 2-second gap between tracks on homemade audio CDs. Hope you can spend some time creating your "perfect" music compilation. If not, well, at least you now know (almost) exactly what I like to hear.

Nice idea for a thread! Difficult to do, though, as it inevitably means leaving a whole load of stuff out. I'll try a compilation myself. Mine will have to cover a range of genres, though, as I'd struggle to do otherwise.

Several tracks from yours (Zappa, Yes, Purple) could make it into my list.

Okay - here's my first attempt. Really tough to do, and so I just made quick picks and if I was doing this for real I'd take hours agonising over choices and so the list would likely turn out quite different. Hell, if I did it again very quickly right now, it would likely turn out quite different.

No particular running order. This would split onto two CDs quite nicely, total running time 2:38:54. There's no way I could call this a "perfect" compilation, though.

1. Yes - Sound Chaser (9:29)
2. The Beatles - Penny Lane (3:00)
3. Deep Purple - Burn (7:30)
4. Bruford - Fainting In Coils (6:32)
5. Booker T & the MG's - Time Is Tight (4:56)
6. Chic - My Forbidden Lover (4:40)
7. Brand X - Nightmare Patrol (7:55)
8. Frank Zappa - Keep It Greasy (8:20)
9. Budgie - Melt The Ice Away (3:32)
10. Bee Gees - Jive Talkin' (3:46)
11. Led Zeppelin - Achilles Last Stand (10:25)
12. Toto - Lovers In The Night (4:25)
13. Journey - Escape (5:15)
14. Jackson 5 - The Love You Save (3:04)
15. Hue & Cry - Labour Of Love (3:33)
16. Tom Scott - L.A. Expression (6:22)
17. The Mahavishnu Orchestra - Vital Transformation (6:16)
18. Weather Report - Havona (6:00)
19. Return To Forever - Dayride (3:24)
20. Antonio Carlos Jobim - Wave (2:56)
21. The Dictators - Search And Destroy (3:28)
22. Deodato - Super Strut (8:54)
23. Quincy Jones - Razzamatazz (4:15)
24. Rush - Tom Sawyer (4:33)
25. The Four Tops - Reach Out I'll Be There (2:55)
26. Buddy Rich - Love For Sale (4:50)
27. Steely Dan - My Old School (5:45)
28. Neneh Cherry - Buffalo Stance (5:42)
29. Japan - Ghosts (4:31)
30. Joe Pass - Walking My Baby Back Home (2:41)
