Play that funky music white boy...

So, having discovered the time and energy to become acquainted with practising again, I find I am in need of a good solid grounding in funky music. I want to start building a listening library (already posted on the Jamerson thread), and I'm looking for advice on where to start.

I would greatly appreciate suggestions of CDs where great funky bass playing is to be found. I'm particularly looking to work on the slap/pop chops, and I guess what I'm trying to do is create a list of statement recordings to listen to and lift.

Anything from pop, to R&B, to funk, to jazz, to whatever, I'm most grateful for any direction. And my apologies if I'm duplicating a thread here - I looked, and couldn't find exactly what I'm after, though maybe I didn't look in the right place/or at the right thread?

Well, the sticky thread in a Recordings forum "Funk 101" would be an appropriate start, IMO

Thanks for the suggestion guys, I'm on it starting later today. I have been looking at the Funk 101 thread, and will get some insight from there for sure, but I would like to start by building a library of 20 - 30 CDs of guys I can immerse myself in on a daily basis in the car, at the office, etc. Not an easy task, there is a lot of choice for sure. Maybe I should approach it this way: "If you could buy 1 CD per bassist (doesn't have to be his own record), which one would it be?"

Which Jamerson recording would you want?
Which Marcus recording would you want?
Which Bootsy recording would you want?
Anthony Jackson,
Will Lee,
Nathan Watts,

And on and on....

Doesn't matter if they are the main artist or a sideman, just so long as they are groovin' like a mofo.

As far as Jamerson, you're better off buying a Motown Compilation. 90% of it will be him.

What he said.
That is one amazing thread. I just found it the other day, and for sure if I did earlier IŽd been a much better player by now.
No kidding!
