I don't use IMovie but all the programs I HAVE used include an option for more than one audio track. You'll need to move it in sync w/ the other but that hasn't been too difficult in my experience.

This may help

not sure if works on a Mac because I've never tried but "Audacity" is a free program, google it.

short learning curve, select the right input (usually line-in or mic) import the track you want to play along with and press record. You should be able to hear your bass or guitar while playing, if not, check the "Volume" control panel to make sure some aren't muted.

A lot can be done with this, check out my vids on youtube (link in my profile), It's not that great but going by YouTube standards it isn't half-bad. I simply run a multi-fx box into the line-in on my soundcard. The sound comes out my pc speakers. I have no need for an amp anymore since I don't play out.

it will take a bit learning how to adjust levels and video syncing can be a pain in the ... but the final product is well worth it imo. Good Luck

*if you have "cabinet simulation" on your devices then it's best to use them.

What I do is the following:

I record the track on garageband, while the backing tracks plays on the background (with itunes) and also record myself with the built-in camera from the macbook.

Then, you export what you recorded with garageband into itunes. After that just take the video of yourself playing and sync it with the music and your track.

Here's an example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F1hZluDuT8k

Hope this helps,
Iván
