Damn, just found the bass sound of my dreams only to find later that it is probably programmed on keys using some sampled bass!!!

Corine Bailey Raye - Like a Star

Check here, bass starts at 1:02 - this is the s**t!!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e19eZ...eature=related

On credits page there are mentioned only keys and guitar!
http://www.discogs.com/Corinne-Baile...release/924142

Which bass cound cop with that sound?
This is apparently the bass sample, not synth sound!

I'd think something like a fretless Music Man would be able to get you there- strong lo-mid presence. A big pickup, near the bridge, is what I think you'd need. And an amazing compressor. And good technique.

Producer, Bass. Ever notice how popular that is? That's because bass players know how to listen.

Oh yeah, lots of compression.

Thanks, looks like bass was played by producer.
dmusic - thanks, I apprecciate for your advice I checked your background in profile.
So I will check some musicmans then, I avoided them all the time, maybe its time to rethink.

While I understand there is a lot of studio processing in the final sound, I can hear the heavy and smooth compression on the bass.
I am also eyeing the dbx 166xl rack compressor now - do you guys think this unit can bring some of this sound used with two channels working in series or is necessary to use something more expensive like distressor or ua stuff?

that's a very growly sound. Musicman would probably be best. You might even want to check out a Warwick Thumb..
The kick drum adds to the perceived depth as well.

A big part to that sound is the kick drum attack that covers the attack of the bass. IMHO
