This is an interesting topic, so I'll do the editing...
And here's an interesting little album: The Chuck Rainey Coalition.

| | | My favorite example of the Jerry Jemmott greatness is on B.B. King's studio recording of "Why I Sing The Blues". Plus, you get to hear the Fender Jazz bass in all it's growly glory.
For Chuck Rainey, +1 for Steely Dan's "Aja". Pure genius bass playing. A perfect example of why being a great bass player doesn't have to be about wanking. Quote:

IIRC, Rainey only plays on 1 track, "Green Flower Street".
Anthony Jackson does a stellar job on "I.G.Y" and "Ruby, Baby".
Marcus Miller, Will Lee, & (I think) Abe Laboriel are also on that album.
As great as Aja is...IMO, The Royal Scam showcases Rainey even more ("Kid Charlemagne", "Green Earrings", "The Fez", "Don't Take Me Alive", etc).
Another favourite Rainey disc I like is the Roberta Flack/Donny Hathaway album with "Where Is The Love".

| | | | Here's a walk down memory lane-
My first recollection of Chuck Rainey was from Joe Walsh's Barnstorm album (check it out, he's on one track).
I already had Walsh's Rocky Mountain Way album so I had my parents give me Barnstorm for Xmas '72(?).
Anyway, in my mind, Kenny Passarelli was Walsh's bass player...I saw Chuck Rainey's name listed in the liners & I thought, "Now who's this bum"? Katy Lied was released shortly thereafter & I was hooked on Rainey...totally. Definitely my favourite player from '75 until he went into 'semi-retirement' in the late '80s or so.

| | | | "I.G.Y"-Anthony Jackson
"Green Flower Street"-Chuck Rainey
"Ruby Baby"-Anthony Jackson
"Maxine"-Marcus Miller
"New Frontier"-Abe Laboriel
"The Nightfly"-Marcus Miller
"The Goodbye Look"-Marcus Miller
"Walk Between Raindrops"-Will Lee
Jackson's low B string is pretty apparent on the 2 tracks he played.
