Hey guys,

I was listening to Ahmad Jamal and Michel Camilo's version of "Poinciana".
Can anyone direct me on the correct form of the piece and what version(s) i should know for gigging?

Thanks!

It's an AABA form - I've played it many times - OK - here are the changes :

A

CMaj7/CMaj7/Gmin7/C7
Fmin6/Fmin6/CMaj7 then 1st time DMin7/G7 - 2nd time CMaj7

B

Ab7/Ab7/G7/G7
Ab7/Ab7/G7/G7

Thanks Bruce,

There is also a 8 or 16 bar intro that is on the dominant right?

Um, hold everything there. Whatever the key is [Eb is my recollection, but it doesn't matter], there's two bars of MINOR on the tonic in the first line, before going to the IV. I think it's very clear in the Camilo version, which I own, and I've performed it more than once. I also saw Ahmad J play it live.

Also, IMO, there's nothing 'optional' about the dominant intro/outro--it's integral to the composition.

I'm sure it's in one of the Real Books somewhere.

!

I've never heard the "Camillo" version of the tune - I was just answering the question asked - copied above!

It's a very well-known Jazz standard and what I provide was the basic chord sequence or "changes" - of course great musicians will play around with this and develop thier own "take" on the tune - that's a big part of what makes them great musicians!!

If you want the Camillo version it's on Lucas Pickford's site :
