They played a 'punkified' version of Reggae.
Examples abound on the first 2-3 albums.

"The Bed's too Big without you" is a good example.

"So Lonely" from "Outlandos D'Amour" is one of my all-time favorite Police tunes. "Roxanne", from the same album, is even more popular (I think), but I prefer SL.

These have elements of Reggae - but neither is really a straight Reggae tune - they have rock/punk choruses/sections and a Reggae -influenced verse.

"The Bed's too big without you " mostly maintains the Reggae groove/feel throughout - but most Police songs - like those mentioned above are hybrid forms.

Regatta de Blanc, quite literally "White Reggae" might be a good place to start...

Yup if you mean literally, then :

Main Entry: re·gat·ta
Pronunciation: ri-'gä-t&, -'ga-
Function: noun
Etymology: Italian regata
: a rowing, speedboat, or sailing race or a series of such races

Isn't anyone gonna say the obligatory
"They were an incredible band; I wish they'd get back together."
And "Sting wrote some great basslines".

+1. I actually liked Stewart Copeland the best of the three of them.

Sting was, and is, into raggae. Even these days you can hear his raggae influence.

Love me some "Walking on the Moon" off Regatta de Blanca - definitely some reggae happening in that on. Good stuff!

I know about it but never heard it, man. I'll try to find some tunes on the Net. Thanks for the recommendation!

One of the best drummers ever. I always hear something new in his playing. Not to take anything away from Sting....

Sting is probably one of the most underrated bass players out there.

Sting "under-rated"?

I like Sting but hardly consider him under-rated as I see him mentioned constantly in these threads. I just think Stewart Copeland was the best thing about the "Police". Again I am not trying to take anything away from Sting but really listen to drums in their stuff. Stewart Copeland is amazing.

Copeland is great - one of my favourites.

He does speed up, though.. he's like a wind-up toy in reverse.
