Keep Your Body Workin
Just An Illusion
Disco Nights (Rock Freak)

Hmmm... When I think "old school" R&B bass, none of those songs come to mind. This probably stems from differences in the definition of R&B. However, I do agree with the Jamerson comment. I would say that anything Mowtown counts.

Yeah, I guess I am lumping in a few genres together: Disco/Funk/Dance/Soul under R&B. Apologies for generalizing.

In addition to what's been posted...
Let's see, back when I started moving from Rock to R&B/Soul/Funk, it was stuff like-

Brick-"Dazz", "Dusic", "Ain't Gonna Hurt Nobody"
Heatwave- "Boogie Nights","Super Soul Sister", "The Groove Line", "Eyeballin'"
Rufus- "You Got The Love", "Tell Me Something Good"
Narada Michael Walden- "Tonight I'm All Right", I Shoulda Loved Ya", "The Real Thing"(AI's Randy Jackson rips on this one!)
Pockets- "Come Go With Me"
LTD- "Holding On"
Grey & Hanks- "You Fooled Me", "(Love To See You)Dancing"
Thelma Houston- "Don't Leave Me This Way"
Cheryl Lynn- "To Be Real"
Tavares- "It Only Takes A Minute", "Whodunit"
Spinners- "Games People Play"
Con Funk Shun-"Ffun"
Commodores- "Fancy Dancer", "Come Inside", "Squeeze The Fruit"
AWB- The entire AWB, Cut The Cake & Soul Searching albums

Etc...

Couple of instrumentals worth mentioning-
"Scorpio"- Dennis Coffey
"Midnight Soul Patrol"- Quincy Jones(I Heard That! album).

If you're mentioning instrumentals, "Hang Up Your Hang Ups" by Herbie Hancock. And do you remember, although not an instrumental, Ronnie Jordan's "Jackal"?

Don't remember Ronnie Jordan's "Jackal".
...although that did remind me of Ronnie Laws' "Always There".

FWIW, I really liked 'Funk/R&B' instrumentals of that era-
"Contusion"- Stevie Wonder from Songs In The Key Of Life
AWB- "Sweet & Sour" from Warmer Communications(Best album cover...EVER!).
"Sao Paulo" & "Savoir Faire"- Chic

Even the ones that had a tad of vocals like "Open Sesame"(Kool & The Gang) & "People's Choice" by People's Choice...IIRC.

Do it...just so you know, I'm still on 56k.

I have downloaded music, though...my Dell DJ came with $25 worth of freebies from Music Match; takes about 30 minutes for me to download a 4:00 minute tune. Blecchhh.

Me too... I might look a bit lame when I'm rockin' "Proud to be Black" by Run DMC, but I rock it hard.
