The Pot by Tool

Wow. I haven't tried to play it, but it seems like it would be really hard. Not because of the how technical the notes are. Just keeping the rhythm. It has a really weird groove, like the bass and guitar are being played in 3/4 and the singer and drummer are playing in 4/4 or something weird like that. It just seems like it would be incredibly hard to play without the CD. Everyone would have to be really in sync. It seems cool to me. :P I think i have ADD or something. At least when i'm tired. I'm really random when i'm tired.

<-- Thats a funny smiley. I'm adding that to MSN.

One key to playing multiple time signatures within a band is to be able to keep your own time, and not rely on another instrument to do the counting for you. If you can solidly count and keep rhythm to yourself, and so can your bandmates, it's golden. Also if you haven't already, go check out some King Crimson.

I effing love that whacky bassline in this song by the way.

well...I just made a sample of me playing The Pot...
(sorry, only half song) ( a few errors of course)
This is the chain:

Me
Rick 4003
Behringer BDi21
Boss me50b
audioboard
Cool edit pro

I cleared the bass with cool edit to play on a base of highs, here's the result:
(both pu opened, more like the Chancellor sound)
http://www.gospel.bo.it/displayimage...lbum=542&pos=7
(only the bridge pu, my sound)
the intro is the same, (only bridge pu)
http://www.gospel.bo.it/displayimage...lbum=542&pos=5

and here's also a short sample of the 46&2 intro, this time with the same things plus an old Guyatone Chorus Flanger:

Thanks!!!

the flanger sound is coming from this old Guyatone Ps023 for guitar (chorus/flanger/tremolo) that I really love...

only part of this song i can play is the main riff, but the intro is freaking cool, and hard as heck to track. would you please post a tab of the intro?

Nice job Micolao.

The majority of the song is in 4/4 as far as the bass goes, what makes it sound off is that some notes are hit off the beat/tempo s it throws you off.

Nad hit the nail on the head though, as far as explaining multiple time sigs in a band setting.

Figuring out how to play The Pot came really naturally to me after listening to it over and over.

The rhythm is fun, to say the least.

Don't let your ear's fool you, this is exactly how Justin plays it. Lot's of hammers and pull-offs.

right Tbird good tab
and also you're right about lot of hammers

the same part for example repeats in the song from 1:33 to 1:50 but played on the lowD
(it's obvious that you have to tune in DADG to play this song as most of other Tool's songs)

It's not as difficult as it sounds.
labgnat, try
more simple once you figure it out in your mind
