I like power metal, but the vocalists bother me. I love epic harmonized guitars, but I don't like falcetto vocals.... well I do, sometimes.
Anyone know any power metal with vocals that aren't power metal?
Strange example: Dethklok. A lot of their stuff is harmonized power metal guitar, but they have Death Metal vokillz. I'd like to hear something like that, but better. I love the cartoon, but Dethklok has some rather uninspiring music/vocals in terms of metal.
But anyways... that would be cool. Also, any proto power metal bands (examples: Rainbow, Dio). I like epic, but some vocalists go too far with waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhs.

I don't really like them because the vocals almost sound like they are making fun of metal. Just IMO. Congrats on playing with them though, they're pretty popular.

Into Eternity are prog/power type but don't have vocals that aren't too dramatic. Well, at times they do, but it never gets too 80s. That kind of schtick bothers me as well, but I dig those guys.
Omnium Gatherum would work I think. They fall into that huge melodeth rehash trend which makes me a bit ill, but I still dig them. Spirits and August Light was a pretty rad album.
In Flames? I'm sure you know them. Evergrey, maybe? Mörk Gryning? They are good.

Have you heard the band Gamma Ray?

For In Flames check out Whoracle (my favourite), Colony, and The Jester Race. For At The Gates, well, they really only had one great album: Slaughter Of The Soul. It's incredible (and probably my favourite death metal album, next to Cynic's Focus).

If you're into the Bodom-ish sound, maybe check out Skyfire and Norther.

no vocals at all. And no bassist either (two guitarists and a drummer), except for when they're playing with Trans Am as Trans Champs or F*cking Am.
Good, fun stuff. |

Have you tried Blind Guardian? It still gets typically power-metally vocal-wise, but also goes gruff in spots.

Good, fun stuff. | I like them too...the no bass player thing kinda stinks though.
I'll check out Trans Champs. |

work with Trans Am. And if you dig that, you're pretty sure
to enjoy Trans Am's own records. You'll get some great bass work outta them! Lots of tracks feature two bassists and no guitar.
Expect some electro-cheese on top of the synth-gravy and you're golden. |

Graeme | I wouldnt say At the Gates is power metal! That is more akin to Black Metal as far as the melodic guitar side of things go. But still catchy guitar work.
I do agree about the In Flames referal though. And actually if you want super catchy guitar work with a little deeper (but not death metal deep vocals nor singing wahhhhhhhhhh vocals) check out Darkest Hour. Not power metal but excellent melodic tinged double guitar work that is still driving.

10/10 album! BUY OR DIE!
One of my favorite bands to surface over the last few years, if you know Mike Scalzi and John Cobbett (Ludicra, The Lord Weird Slough Feg, etc.), to me this is the best band both of them do.
Fun fact: their original bassist left the band to join Pink on tour, made a bunch of cash, then rejoined Hammers and funded a recording session. Now THAT is the way to sell out! http://www.myspace.com/hammersofmisfortune

It's got some awesome guitar work in it, and fantastic vocals, as long as you're into screaming. I would probably avoid their newest album, "Temptation Come My Way." It's much more laid back, old school Southern metal. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
