Pre production, out the window

Sign in to disble this ad
I've been working on a album the past month. As a band we've done lots of homework and pre studio rehearsals prior to going in. So far we recorded basic tracks for 6 of 15 songs with some over dubs for gutiars. I went in yesterday to punch in on some of my miss cues and redo one of the songs I wasn't happy with.
Well one thing led to another and I re-did 2 songs.
I spent hours practicing parts that got thrown out the window. While I was happy with my parts and my playing, as things are building I can see how some of my playing was over the top especially where the vocals fit in and where exta guitar tracks added.
I wouldn't say pre production was a waste as we would be that much less prepared but it's F***ed up how much can change when you start to pic things apart.
Next pre production rehearsal I'll be going in with new ears and less can = more. I hope my bass parts don't turn out lame though.
I have limited recordig exp and it's been nesrly 2 decades since the last time I did something serious.
Is this a common experience for you guys who do this all the time?
