And check out the instrumental hip-hop beat "Bounce Wit' It".

Wrote a thread not to long ago about being depressed about my bass playing. I took the advice and played with my new keyboard, and listend to some stuff I haven't in a while: rap/hip-hop.

Anyway this is the product of that. The drums, organ, chorused piano, and the really quiet orchestra hits in the "verses" were all played on the Yamaha PSR-77, then recorded, and sync'd in Audacity. The Bass was my passive POS, through my PDDI, recorded w/ Audacity as well and sync'd with the above. I then peiced it together, and added in small clips of a vinal scratch track that I got with eJay Sound Selections 2. It's royalty free, so it's all good.

Anyway, what do ya think of my 1st attempt at hip-hop beats?

EDIT: Oh, and in case anyone wonders, the PDDI's settings are those of my avatar (finally became a supporting member ), with blend on full.

EDIT 2: "Remixed" it. Listen to "version 2" and let me know!

IMO, it's a good start, but it needs more going on. Right now it's decent but very plain, but could definitely use another two tracks or so to really fill out the space. If you could provide a bassline that kept a steady flow, say mix up quarter and eight notes, and try not to go with anything much longer than that for most of the song, it could be a pretty good backing track.

Just my thoughts/first impressions

I liked the bass line and keyboards a lot. I really liked your bass sound too. The beat works but I think if you threw some drum and bass style breaks in there (like the part with keyboards after the scratccing) it would sound sick.

Thanks for the responces, and to CHILDISHGAMBINO for the comment on my bass tone! That was a tone that I actually got with some help from BurningSkies

Listening to it again, after sleep, then work, I would probably just keep the "chorus" part (the beat with the piano). As for the intro, I really think that I should've just come up with something without a drum beat. Might re-do/mix it with a bouncier beat for the verse. And less scratches...

I like both of your ideas but the drums kinda bug me. What are you using for drum programming? Does it have a shuffle function? If it does mess with it on version 2 to get that drum and bass break sound. Have you ever used HammerHead? It's old but it's free. Or Have you ever tried Fruityloops? You can do some pretty sick beats with either of these programs and they have a wide range of sounds.

I lke the groove and I love the sound. Keep trying. I really like your ideas, I'm just not diggin' the drums so much.

Edited for sloppy spelling. I just got home from the hospital for ankle surgery - a steel plate and 5 pins. I'm a little out of 'er
