Hey TB,
I've rediscovered my love of Progressive Rock and want to know more bands to check out.
I was raised in the 80s on:
Rush
Yes
King Crimson
Jethro Tull
Triumph
King's X
Marillion
Genesis
Peter Gabriel
etc
It was all just rock to me (classic rock at points even)... I never really knew it as progressive.
Lately I've been digging the like of:
Porcupine Tree
Tool
APC
Oceansize
Liquid Tension Experiment
Katatonia
Muse
etc
I now realize that a lot of this falls in "Progressive Rock" and I know the lines of genres are passed. I really do hate labels.
What I know I dislike is cookie monster vocals and hair metal 80s vocals.... actually I listen to a lot of Jazz and Fusion because outside of R&B and Soul, I dislike vocals in general.
Reading the names listed and the general dislikes.... can you give me some new names to track down
Thanks much! I should probably just start playing instead of always listening |

(I agree about cookie monster vocals. I'd really like to get into Opeth, but I can't because of the singing.) |

I think I have a bootleg of Spock's Beard... I'll need to revisit them. Trans-Siberian Orchestra is interesting and I have some of their stuff but don't really listen to it.
I don't get Mars Volta either... can't say I dug anything I've actually heard from them. |

I'll check out the Flower Kings (name rings a bell, but I don't think I've heard them)... and thanks for the links! |

So - bands that haven't been mentioned - Gentle Giant maybe and Greenslade, who were formed by Dave Greenslade who was in Colisseum, who were an earlier band that had elements of Blues and long Jazzy solos...?
The Strawbs, when they had Rick Wakeman were a bit "prog"?
There is also the Canterbury scene - Soft Machine and Caravan are interesting..?

12.5 is also incredible but it might be better if you know the original songs. |

I think they're remarkable. Existed for but a flash, and then gone forever.

| | | You must buy these two albums. Instrumental progressive rock with fretless bassist Sean Malone composing everything. He also plays Champman Stick, keys, and guitar.
Bill Bruford, Steve Howe, Sean Reinert, John Myung, and other famous prog rockers make appearances as well.
If I had to make a list of my favourite albums, these two would be in the top ten.

Do what I did: Cruise progarchives.com. The thing that's awesome about them, you see what genre of "prog" your favorite bands fall under. Most you've listed are either Art Rock or Symphonic Prog, search the genres... up at the top, they will have the "essential albums of the genre" make sure you have all of them. Then cruise the list and find more... THEN check out other prog genres.

Keep in mind that these bands are all very proggressive, but you sure as hell wouldn't find them sharing a stage with your run of the mill proggers.
