the promise - the making of darkness (BRUCE)

so i just finished watching this movie - the promise: the making of darkness on the edge of town. i'm not even a big bruce springsteen fan, but this movie really moved me. there are still some airtimes on HBO for those interested.

what i loved was that is showed how an album is crafted, how an artist broke free from the hold of the record companies, and most importantly, how bruce tells his story in general, in music, in this album - and the dramatic affect of this album on bruce's career. it includes a ton of film from the actual making of the album (great forsight), and is overlayed with current interviews with all the members of the E-street band. any musician should love it.

can't wait to get my hands on the Darkness Ann. box. It includes this movie, two live video shows, the remastered CD, another CD with studio outtakes and a book.

IIRC release date is Nov.18th.

I saw part of the Promise online, counting the days until it comes out. When I was 15, my brother took me to my first concert, Bruce and the E Street Band,it was at that concert I decided I HAD to play guitar.........

I just watched it. Can't wait for the full box.

I didn't know Garry used a Precision for that album.

I caught this the other night as well. Really cool. One of the most impressive aspects of Springsteen's career (to me, anyway), is how he has such an immense catalogue, but will only release what he thinks is good enough, or what fits in the context of an album, etc...

So many artists today just release anything and everything they have. An artist as prolific as Springsteen has the sense and restraint to know when a song is ready for public consumption. Such a great approach.

Yeah, he gave away the songs he thought would be hits, not to many people would do that. I still dig the songs he and Little Steve gave Southside Johnny. Darkness is one of my favorite Bruce albums, it came out right when I was feeling a certain way in my life.

Man, I think this hits on such a key part of why someone thinks an album is good. If it resonates with you at a certain point in your life, I feel like it will always be there, and will always bring those feelings back, no matter how much time passes.

Oh yeah, there is no time machine in the world like music that's for sure.
