Proper instrument levels in metal?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey, just recorded a little Megadeth to test my recording setup.

Have a listen and tell me if the bass/drum/guitar levels are ok. Forgive the sloppy guitar playing. I am not a master of all trades.

also, turn off your EQ because i accidentally activated the eq in my recording program.

Overall it sounds pretty good. For my tastes though, the cymbals are a bit trebley and the bass is still a bit low in the mix. Are you running it direct or are you mic-ing your bass amp?

The i recorded the bass and guitars direct via usb from a pod x3 live. The drums are from reason 4.

Also, I just listened through my speakers for the first time and it sounds like mud compared to my headphones. Do you guys usually mix through phones, or do you try different sound setups to compromise?

Never mix through headphones. Always try your mix on every setup you can get your hands on.
