Is punk dead?

Sign in to disble this ad
http://new.music.yahoo.com/blogs/get...ge=77#comments

I read this article on yahoo and I have to say that I was a bit stunned. First of all by the fact that any of these bands are considered punk. Some in their present form and some were never punk. I have been a punk fan for a long time but I have to say calling the bands discussed in this article punk is like calling Michael Bolton a rock star IMO. I have to say that I believe that punk is not dead as long as there are bands out there like NOFX and Bad Religion. But as is the case here and most of the time, the truly good bands get little attention and the sanitized MTV friendly bands carry the flag. I think it's sad that these bands are even in the punk category. Green Day you could make a case for twelve years ago but not so much now. Maybe the same is true for Blink 182. I think the flaw in this article is that the writer is looking to the wrong bands to support the argument that punk is dead. Maybe it's not burning up the charts but it's far from dead.

Discuss..........

Dead since 1981. It should be considered as "oldies".

This is pretty much how I feel about it too. The newer stuff should be called "punk influenced" IMHO.

Of course, this is the same way I feel when I hear someone being called a hippie too. I'd say "hippie" was pretty much over by '70 or '71. Having long hair or dressing a certain way doesnt make you a hippie. Having a mohawk doesnt make you a punk. It's fashion.

Remember, this is all IMHO so take it with a grain of salt.

Punk is not dead as long as there are still bands with the same attitude, philosophy, and musical influences as the first punk bands. And as long as the Armitage Shanks are still playing, writing, and recording, I will still have faith in the enduring nature of punk.

I agree that most of the bands just put on the clothes and call themselves punk but I do think that there are still punk bands around that are true to form.

I saw that and about puked! But then again I have never seen anything on Yahoo music that was worth reading. Rancid's Let the Dominoes fall should be album of the year, but it will go to some no talent Hip Hopper or sleazy chick that over sings

no, it's not. Hopefully the mainstream version of 'punk' i.e. trendpunk is though, because that was just terrible.

i agree with 5stringblues about the "punk" bands that are around today and them being punk influenced.

i love the music, and bands like rancid, and the like, but i don't think "punk" is anywhere close to what it use to be when the ramones and the clash first came around.

True enough. I do think the music played by "punk" bands now is close to old punk but the ethos is not the same.

Old punk bands didnt say "hey, lets try to sound like this" , whereas you can tell some of the newer bands are certainly trying to sound like old punk.

commercialized "punk bands" like fallout boy and green day really shouldnt be consitered punk. Why mtv calls them punk I Dont know. They look too frendly. They arent loud fast or offensive. And dont have the energy that old punk bands do. Theres always going to be some good old punk bands still out there like dri they sound the same as they did back in the 80s. Lower class brats is probably one of they newer punk bands i really listen to alot. they arent in it for money or fame just out to have fun and play shows and party. which is how it should be. There are some pretty good local bands in portland. I love where they play shows they set up under a bridge in the industrial district of portland and play.

Punk has evolved, but thats OK. There still real punkers out there today, they are just different from the 'old school punkers'. There is great old school punk and great contemporary punk. Long live punk!

Well I think the main stream media is not as shocked by the antics of real punk bands anymore. And real punk is not very popular, on the other hand Punk Influenced (good choice of words from a poster above) bands are main stream, hence the article.
