Cool R&B/Soul Suggestions

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi, folks. I'm looking for some suggestions as far as some classic r&b/soul records go... sort of the "Sampler" platter of guys like Jamerson and Babbit, Cogbill, Jemmot... (any other greats you can think of, too!)

I've been picking up a few singles on iTunes, and a record here and there, but it's largely been unfocused.

I'm not at all familiar with "Philly Soul," so if you guys have any suggestions on where to start there, I'd greatly appreciate it!

Thanks, everybody!

If you're looking for a good tune check out "Tighten Up" by Archie Bell and the Drells. It's a classic and very funky.

If you want a good album check out "Aretha Franklin & King Curtis Live at Fillmore West". Funky Jemmot bass lines.

I'm digging "Tighten Up." Who's the player?

+1 on the King Curtis live album. "Memphis Soul Stew" and "Changes" are a couple favorites of mine. I almost like the 3-minute studio version of "Memphis Soul Stew" better -- but note that if you're searching for it on iTunes, you'll find that it's incorrectly listed as being by Solomon Burke.

As far as classic R&B, I love Babbitt's work on Stevie Wonder's "Signed, Sealed, Delivered", Gladys Knight's "Midnight Train To Georgia" and Marvin Gaye's "Mercy, Mercy Me". Jamerson has a LONG list of great performances, but "Bernadette" by the Four Tops seems to be a bass player's favorite.

Another of my favorite R&B basslines is Wilton Felder's work on the Jackson 5's "I Want You Back".

check out donny hathaway "live". it's got willie weeks on bass, smoking grooves, and CLASSIC SOLO. check out curtis mayfield "superfly" has lucky scott on bass, great grooves on that record. Also check out Diana Ross & Marvin Gaye, "Diana & Marvin", it's got some great bass grooves on there, i think it's Babbitt on bass.

I've been picking up a few singles on iTunes, and a record here and there, but it's largely been unfocused.
A couple of Cogbill tunes I bought off iTunes-
"Funky Broadway"-Wilson Pickett
"Son Of A Preacher man"-Dusty Springfield

I also bought Archie Bell's "Tighten Up" + "Sweet Soul Music" by Arthur Conley...both seem to remind me of each other for some reason.
Not sure who played bass on either.
Wish iTunes would stock Shirley Ellis' "The Name Game".

Chuck Rainey? Aretha's "Rock Steady" & Flack/Hathaway's "Where Is The Love"?

If you're looking for some instrumental R&B/Funk/Soul-
"Machine Gun"-The Commodores
"Outa-Space"-Billy Preston
"Thunder Thumbs & Lightning Licks"-The Brothers Johnson
"Pick Up The Pieces" & "Goin' Home"-AWB
"Contusion"-Stevie Wonder

A nice R&B/Soul tune to learn/know is "If I Ever Lose This Heaven"...AWB does a nice cover of this; also, Quincy Jones version from the album Body Heat (IIRC, it's Chuck Rainey). A classy, Classic tune, IMO.

+1

pickup a bunch of average white band records. the self-titled album is good, "soul searching", "cut the cake", they are all great. if you like more funk get some earth wind and fire too, verdine white is a GREAT bassist.

I appreciate all the suggestions, folks! Here's what I picked up over the last few days:

Al Green - Greatest Hits
Dusty Springfield - Dusty in Memphis
Wilson Pickett - Greatest Hits

...and a little bit of funk...
Tower of Power - Soul Vaccination
Parliament Funkadelic - Greatest Hits

And a bunch of stuff on iTunes... I spent way too much at the record store, but I'm really enjoying exploring this type of music!

Thumbs up

Most will argue, but once heard the arguments stop... Willie Weeks playing on Donny Hathaway's Live version of "Voice Inside" (Everything is Everything)!!!! WHEW!!!!!

Willie has a a 3:23 second solo that is the funkiest groove ever recorded live. Make sure you hear the Live version for this solo. It's the audition piece Prince makes his new Bassists play (so I have been told by someone who is close to a recent Prince Bass player). Bass Player magazine transcribed it a few months ago too.

Great suggestions by all. If your looking into P-funk stuff, another great band to look into is Cameo, who were also pioneers in the funk/r&b/rock thang. Some of the funkiest ballads there are. And of course....the hardest workin man in shobiz, James Brown.

"Bad Luck" - Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes & "Ain't No Stoppin' Us Now" - McFadden & Whitehead.
Stretch first, they ain't easy basslines. I had to play that damn 2nd song for 15 minutes once at a wedding reception....IN A DIFFERENT KEY!!!!
