This clip is taken from a
performance Jaco did with Weather
Report in 1979 at the Greek Theater
on May the 26th. It is a good recording,
but to hear it extra well you must
turn up the volume at an extra
high decibel-level. It is a rather short
clip and is at the same time in MP3,
so it will take about 20 seconds or
less to downoad( depending on your
internet-connection speed of course): http://www.mediafire.com/?a40dbbnmvajcy |

| | | | Well, I must admit that I posted
this clip to showcase the technical
side of Jaco, and that it's far from
his most musical playing. But then
again I never advertised this clip
as anything more than it is, a mind-
blowing display of speed.
This clip might be all chops, but
I still think it's good to listen to.
And I think it sounds far from "ass". |

and Jazzomaniac, yes, it is indeed a good showcase of his technical abilities. The fact that he uses only two fingers in his plucking hand (last time I checked anyway, can someobody confirm this?) to attain that many notes is nothing short of astounding.
Now, don't get me wrong, I love fast playing. IMO, shredding, if done tastefully, is some of the most awesome sounding stuff on the planet. I've heard some of Jaco's better solos, and I enjoyed them very much indeed. I merely thought that this one didn't sound as good as his usually do.

I love the way in which the jiggles and the farts both coalesce into a symphony of bodily function. As to it's effects, I find that after being serenaded by copious amounts of ass, my overall demeanor has been augmented in such a way as to more efficiently ascertain those qualities that imbue any object with the character of asses

IMO this is one of the least "jaco" of the jaco solos ive heard. his melodic brilliance is why hes jaco- not just because he had chops, plenty of people could rock out and play a ton of notes before him. nobody before or after him can play changes the way he could, or keep a crowd interested in an unacompanied bass solo the way he could, or be such gasoline on the rhythm sections fire the way he could, that, is why jaco is jaco..
this solo shouldent be labeled "an awesome jaco solo," IMO. |

I agree with everything you just said. But again, the
PURE reason why I posted this was just to show
some impressive speed from Jaco. If you only like to
listen to his more melodic and musical solos, then maybe
this solo isn't for you. Personally, I find EVERYTHING Jaco
did( from everything he did in his "peak" to times when
he was only semi-lucid) interesting in some way. But then again, I'm a Jaco-fanatic
In terms of speed, it is awesome. For musicality, it's
far from his best. But everything's relative to the listener
I guess. As for shredding, if I had to choose between
listening to this clip and some solo by Bily Sheehan, I'd
definitely choose Jaco.
@IconBasser, I can confirm that Jaco plucked with
two fingers exclusively. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
