Still fairly pointless though. |

He can groove and hold down the bottom like a MASTER! Of course he had a wankfest when it was time for that, but he is extremely tasteful holding the groove too.

For me, his grooving stuff, especially when he does Jaco covers, is where his brilliance truly shows. I'm not as enamored with his double thumbing stuff. But that is just me. |

Aside from the fact that he can do amazing things with his fingers and thumbs and his live performances are nothing short of jaw-dropping, he is one classy human being who has dedicated his life to helping bass players of all walks of life learn more then just how to play bass. He teaches a very philosophical approach to life that gets applied to bass playing and then brings it full circle to show how bass playing relates to life. His bass camp and clinics are just a few examples of how much of a class act Victor Wooten is as a person and a bass player.
Hats off to Victor Wooten!

+1 | But - I do tend to agree with this comment. I LOVE what he does with the Flecktones. His solo stuff is impressive - but not my cup o tea.
And as for overrated being a subjective term - yes, with a caveat. I believe you can quantify in some circumstances whether a person's appearance of skill outweighs their ability to deliver the goods.
Overrated implies to me that he cannot live up to the hype that surrounds his name or the expectations of his job. I really fail to see what it is folks think he cannot live up to as a bass player.
As a composer... ok... again subjective and who could ever hope to be universally accepted as an author, screenwriter, composer, painter, whathaveyou - but as a bass player I believe there is more that can be evaluated then just whether or not you like what he does. There are measurables in the mix.
I think Mr. Wooten can stand in just about any situation as a bass player and hold his own in spades. Rock, pop, jazz, country, not so sure if he has classical (upright) chops, but as for the electric bass... I cannot imagine a scenario where he would be in over his head or out of his depth.
So is he an overrated bass player? Unquestionably (IMO) he is not.
