Reccomend me some DUB!

Sign in to disble this ad
I've been listening to a lot of my older screamo albums as of late. I've noticed that on a few of them, the bands would have a DUB instrumental track on their albums (Catharsis, The Degenerics, Amanda Woodward). For whatever reason, 10+ years ago when i initially got these albums i would skip over these tracks, but now i am totally into them.

So, I need some DUB reccomendations now!!

king tubby is awesome. I also really dig the Trojan Dub box set. it is amazing. lots of different artists that you can get a taste of such as the G.G. all stars, Gregory Isaacs, sly and the revolutionaries etc... The Trojan label had some of Jamaica's finest groups. lots of good stuff there.

Maki can point out some very good stuf in this vein. Look into Jah Wobble & Bill Laswell.

Dub Syndicate - Everything is good.
King Tubby
Sly and Robbie
Gregory Isaacs (there are a lot of dub tracks on his albums that are top notch dub)
Easy Star All Stars - Radiodread, Dub Side of the Moon
Lee Scratch Perry (start with Experryments in the Grass Roots of Dub)
Cobra Style - This is an Aston "Family Man" Barrett album
Yabby You
Wackies
Horace Andy (In the Light in Dub is an amazing album)
Aswad - A New Chapter in Dub is a good album too opens with a great envelope bassline.
Augustus Pablo - Everything is good

Dub Trio is great stuff, but represent more of a crossover of Dub with heavier punk and thrash music. If you like this stuff check out Bad Brains - I and I Survived (Dub)

This should get you started.

"Scientist" Overton Brown is really cool. They used an album of his for the the reggae radio station on GTA3.

King Tubby is definitely the place to start. The label to check out for compilations of material from Tubby's studio is Blood & Fire. Try "Freedom Sounds In Dub", "Dub Gone Crazy", "Dub Gone 2 Crazy" and "Termination Dub" (with Glen Brown). Also check out "Dub Me" by Morwell Unlimited Meet King Tubby's. Here's a link to the Blood & Fire website:

Also crucial are dubs by Tubby apprentices Scientist and Prince Jammy(s). One of my favourite dub releases, "Big Showdown", features dubs by both. For modern dub with an old-school sound, Ryan Moore's Twilight Circus is perhaps the best. If you can find the album "A Slice Of English Toast" by Ranking Ann, you'll hear one of Britain's top dubmasters, Mad Professor, on top of his game.

+1 on the Blood & Fire catalog, every album I have bought from them has been great!
Lee Perry's 'Arkology' album is another great source of great and influential Dub.

Yeah, Steve Barrow (one one the heads of Blood & Fire) is a renowned reggae historian who really knows his stuff and is dedicated to re-issueing some of reggae's forgotten gems AND seeing that the royalties go to the right people.

+ 1 on the Augustus Pablo. "King Tubbys Meets Rockers Uptown" is considered by many to be THE dub album. You definitely should have that one in your collection.

Isn't Mick Hucknall from Simply Red another backer for Blood & Fire?

Yes, Mick Hucknall was one of the founders of the label. As far as I know his presence at the label is more from the financial end of things (although he did compile the track listing for "Run It Red").

If you like the original albums, any and all of the cover albums by Easy Star All Stars are recommended: www.easystar.com . I have all three on vinyl and love them. I need to pick up some more Easy Star stuff, they have a great crew.

+1.

And for an interesting take on Saint Bob, "Dreams of Freedom", a Laswell project...kinda a dub/ambient hybrid.

Here is Blood & Fire sampler.... it is fantastic.

Both "Dreams of Freedom" & "Blackwell Dubs" are fantastic renditions of marley tunes.

You absolutely, beyond a doubt, need some Dub Trio.

Amazing dub sandwiched between crazy metal riffs! Woah!
