Sunshine of Your Love - Cream
House of the Rising Sun - Animals
Gimme Some Lovin' - Spencer Davis
Green Onions - Booker T.
I'm A Man - Spencer Davis/Steve Winwood

And I don't think it matters whether the listeners are 15 or 60 - they'll still recognize the music.

Some Kind Of Wonderful - Grand Funk
Cheap Sunglasses - ZZ Top
Too Rolling Stoned - Robin Trower
The Ocean - Zeppelin

I guess it would depend somewhat on the audience,
but even if they couldn't place the song, I bet they could
hum right along (so to speak).

Maybe it's just me, but I don't think half of these songs are recognizable by the "average" person. Heck, I don't even recognize quite a few of them, even though I know the bands! The original poster is more spot on, but this now gives me more new songs to listen to. That being said:

Jackson 5 - I Want You Back
The O' Jays - For the Love of Money
Rage Against the Machine - Killing in the Name of
Isaac Hayes - Theme from Shaft (it doubles the piano, but still easily recognizable)

Some of the ones that people posted, like me, double other instruments. I dunno if that counts but the tune is still memorable.
