Check out the following:

Improvision - Alex Machacek, Jeff Sipe and Matt Garrison
Human Element - Human Element
Nocturnal - Chris Taylor

All three of these records are put out on the AbstractLogix label and IMHO, it's the best imprint for modern fusion out there. Welcome to Abstract Logix | Jazz, Instrumental,Progressive and World Music Portal-CDs, DVDs, Digital Downloads

Also, here's a sneak peak at my band's upcoming fusion album...I'm playing keys, and Adam Nitti on Bass

Michael Manring's "Thonk" album is pretty epic, though it's out of print

Manring on bass, Tim Alexander (primus) on drums, Alex Skolnick (testament) on guitar and Steve Morse (dixie dregs) also on guitar. Talk about a lineup!!!

Jonas Hellborgs "Art Metal" is super sweet

"Octaves of the holy innocents" is an incredible super group with Hellborg, Buckethead, and Michael Shrieve (santana)

And lastly "Attention Deficit" is a group with Manring, Tim Alexander and Alex Skolnick.

All this music can be heard on youtube. Just search the band names

Now I've got to check this record out for sure. I'm fans of all of those guys.

How about Inner Mounting Flame by Mahavishnu Orchestra? It's definitely one of my favorite fusion albums.

+1 on all of those. Their whole website is stocked with great fusion that is happening today. Also check out the DVD Abstact put out called the 'The New Universe', it's chock full of awesome bass playing.

+1 I got that DVD for Christmas and will be going to Raleigh this year for sure. It's amazing to see that much talent in one place.

Bitches Brew complete sessions 4-cd box set--find it used on ebay.
Jaco played w a trio in Germany--there's a dvd of it; unfortunately I can't recall the title but he plays with a truly amazing drummer & trumpeter. Mind blowing stuff.

I think the quintessential Jazz Fusion CD is by John Scofield called 'Loud Jazz'.

Its older (1988) with Gary Grainger playing on it...Its great.
When I think of fusion this is the first thing that pops into my mind.

I revisited the Jean-Luc Ponty Live album a few years ago. I didn't play bass back in the day that I listened to it a fair amount. I went back specifically to listen to Ralphe Armstrong. Pretty great bass playing, I think.

I'm not sure the real fusion guys think this is fusion, but I think it is: Jeff Beck's Blow by Blow (I always preferred it to Wired).

Good luck.

Apart from the awful soundquality I would highly recommend a cd called "flashpoint.

I would certainly check out some 70's Miles Davis-he kind of started it.
Weather report might be interesting too, and Return to forever.
Any older allan holdsworth too.
Some of teh M-base stuff, steve coleman, greg osby and gary thomas used to do is also real interesting-gary thomas' kold cage cd really did something for me when it first came out.
A great album.
Mahavishnu orchestra may also be an interesting band to try.

Those are the first that come to mind( yellow jackets and spyro gyra are also interesting but on the lighter side)

The yellow jackets did a real nice album with bobby mcferrin-band zoom it is called and very nice indeed.
Mat garrisons' solo albums are alright too.
Trilok Gurtu too has made some fascinating cds.
I also like Dennis Chambers' cd-getting even.
Especially the last track with one of my favorite john scofield solos.
Lost tribe is yet another band I like alot.

There's more though...musch more.

Are you perhaps thinking of Trilogue with Albert Mangelsdorf on trombone? (And Alphonse Mouzon on drums!)
