Hey'all..

There have been quite a lot of R&B gigs going on around here at the moment, so a drummer that i play with quite a bit and myself decided that we should get in on the action

Unfortunately we both haven't played or listened to too much R&B - so i'm basically just looking for some good R&B grooves that we can jam over. We'll probably start with some D'Angelo and maybe some Meshell.. but my R&B knowledge is pretty limited! i'm going to head out around town and check out the material that these bands are using- but i would very much appreciate it if you would hit me with your favourites or any recommended recordings...

cheers!

Andy.

Actually Meshell and D'angelo is what you END with!

A few to START with, Marvin Gaye "What's goin on" (James Jammerson)
Tower of Power "Soul Vaccination Live" (Rocco Prestia)
Earth Wind and Fire "Gratitude" (Verdine White)
Sly and Family Stone "Stand" (Larry Grahm)
Donny Hathaway "Live" get the import (Willie Weeks)
Aretha Franklin "Live at the Fillmore East" (Jerry Jermont)

You could chew on those for about a year! All that great stuff you hear on D'angelo and Meshell is the product of years of education with the real "old school". This list is by no means complete. Just a starting point, I'm sure plenty will be added.

IMO... a must own for bassists:

Boxed set: Hitsville USA: 1959-1971. Four CD's and a lifetime of groove and soul lessons!

For a more modern take on some of these great tunes, the two Michael McDonald 'Motown' CD's do a nice job of updating the tunes but still staying true to the original grooves and tunes. Joan Osborne also has a 'Motown' type CD inspired by her stint as one of the singers on the 'Standing in the Shadow' movie. She takes some of the tunes a little 'out' for my taste, but still a great, updated take on some classic soul and R&B tunes.
