recommend me some hardcore

right so its fine time to expand my musical exposure. i get so caught up in my own stuff that i don't have a lot of time to explore and listen to new music. so metal is a genre that in general, i haven't really touched on that much.

not sure if 'hardcore' is what i'm looking for (there's so many sub-sets of metal that i can't really be sure). but it has a really precise, technical aspect to it, with a lot of double bass kicks and meter changes and all that good stuff.

one of my friends is really into bands like 'as blood runs black' and 'saosin.' i like a lot of the instrumental stuff, but the vocals kind of ruin it for me (pigsqueeling, eagle screaming, etc.). i'd like some metal thats a bit less mainstream and generic. can anyone help me out?

Hardcore is really more a punk rock thing than a metal thing. Unless you are counting that metalcore stuff, but with scattered exceptions you don't want to have anything to do with that.

Good introduction to hardcore:

Black Flag - the first four years comp
Minor Threat - discography (everything they put out on one CD)
Bad Brains - Bad Brains
Die Kreuzen - Die Kreuzen

It's all pretty much down hill after that stuff

more hard-rock...but 'These Arms Are Snakes' are a curious blend of metal and several other things delightfully unholy...their song 'Subtle Body' is one of the best basslines I've heard in a while!

want precise, technical playing, lots of crazy drumming and time changes etc?

TOOL!

if you're after something even heavier, um, between the buried and me get a lot of love around these parts, but can't say i've listened to much. doubtless many other metallers will chip in with more suggestions too!

gargh, I was just about to do an edit and get Tool in...curses upon ye!

Justin Chancellor is like a hairy bottom-feeding messiah. and James Keenan brews his own wine, what more can you look for in a singer?

it's one of the fundamental prerequisites i have when auditioning vocalists.

i'll do the honourable thing and give pelican, boris (no thread of recommendations is complete without boris) and isis a mention too.

I think David Randall Blythe would be doing swan dives in his grave if he were to be uttered in the same spacial dimension as 'hardcore'...

But Lamb of God's latest offering 'Sacrament' has some pretty tasty bass going on. And if you're after some nifty drumming, you can do far worse than Monsieur Chris Adler.

Metalcore bass is mostly for guitarists who suck and can only play one string at a time instead of strump open powerchords.

With that being said, some sick metalcore/hardcore bands with even sicker bass players:

Protest the Hero

The Fall of Troy (more experimental, I guess)

Dillinger Escape Plan(+1)

Born of Osiris (more deathcore-ish)

The Number 12 Looks Like You (Grindcore)

IWRESTLEDABEARONCE (Grindcore/Hardcore)

...and my band!

Your Requiem

The best generic metalcore you can get

and you can't go wrong with The Devil Wears Prada for traditional metalcore
