that's a band that grows and changes a LOT from record to record, so it's hard to say which would hit you just right. I loved "Souls At Zero" so that's where I'd start...

That's one of their more gruntly metal albums- still good. The 25 minute drum track at the end is fairly trippy if you space off while listening to it. The bassline on the first song is one of my favorite metal lines.

The Eye of Every Storm is cool as it's almost like metal soundscape music. A Sun That Never Sets is fairly minimal and intimate sounding but very badass.

+1

Enemy of the Sun is an astounding album. Lost, the opener, is an incredible peice of music. it's harrowing and very powerful, and the bassline towards the end is thunderous. The whole Enemy of the Sun album is brilliant, and yes, the drum track is great!

Also, "Through Silver in Blood" is great, in parts reflective, in others, wild with anger. Another riveting listen!

Also, the "A Sun That Never Sets" dvd is very cool. Thats another musical journey, and well worth having, as it explores a visual side of what is a very much an arty band.

I think they're great!

i should have said a little of what kind of stuff i listen to first i guess. i have a wide range of tastes. for metal i love tool, stoner-rock, slayer, old school stuff like maiden, priest, motorhead. so, for neurosis, anything of their phases would probably work for me. just looking for cool stuff.

Times of Grace is my favorite, though all of them are good.

Those guys are buddies of mine, I've actually played through Dave's Ampeg Cab at a show a couple years ago.
I would recommend "Through Silver And Blood" or "Souls At Zero" for starters, though "Word As Law" has the best basslines (but is out of print).

I totally agree, go see them live if you ever get the chance. They put on a wild show.

I recommend it all! I would start at the beginning, They're a very unique band that has evolved a lot over the years. Their first album "Pain of Mind" is pretty much a hardcore album. "Souls at Zero" was the one that hooked me, it is a masterpiece IMO. "Enemy of the Sun" is awesome, very doomy, probably their heaviest album. "Through Silver In Blood" is my favorite though.

Also, the "Times of Grace" album has a sister album by Tribes of Neurot (a Neurosis side-project) called "Grace" which are supposed to sync up with each other. I've yet to hear this for myself, but that's the rumor.

Amazing band!

Amazing band!
I've done that a couple times and it is worth it. Very dark.
The boys just completed their new album with Steve Albini last month, it should be out soon.

Enemy of the Sun, Souls at Zero. great rawk. I haven't listened to them for so long, thanks for the reminder, I'll have to dig those discs out tomorrow... maybe some Earth Crisis and Snapcase too, really piss off the neighbours.

Interesting, what does this synchronisation produce?

Tribes of Neurot are dark ambient experimental... "grace" is a lot of strange and creepy textural noise soundscapes that were written around "Times of Grace" to add even more depth to the music. Listening to it by itself scared the hell out of my friend, who begged me to turn it off because it was too disturbing. lol!

Syncing them up is like playing Dark Side Of The Moon and the Wizard Of OZ together, but the difference is that these were MADE to be played together.

I've read about the synchronisation between Pink Floyd and the Wizard of Oz...quite odd!

In the future I may pick these records up and try them together.

Not knowing what your musical preferences are, I think it safest to start with their later work : The Eye of Every Storm, & A Sun That Never Sets.

I like 'em all, but I hear greater scope and maturity in their later works.
I second your recommendations! Actually it's all the Neurosis I have heard so far, but I'd like to hear more as they're awesome.
I also second Chris2112's suggestion to watch A Sun That Never Sets dvd. We got it at Wacken last year for a ridiculously reasonable price, a good buy indeed

A Sun That Never Sets is an album of extraordinary magnitude.

My DVD version is still sealed though, I'm such a chump.

I truely love "A Sun That Never Sets" and "The Eye of Every Storm". Magnificent albums; the sound of the apocalypse. I like their older work a lot as well. Awesome band!

Not rumor, fact, I have both, and have synced them up. The most amazing part is they both are amazing as stand alones, but when synced just pure mind blowing.

Times of Grace is definitely my favorite!
