recommend me some old school progressive rock

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm a big fan of 70's and 80's progressive rock with bands like Genesis, Pink Floyd, Yes, ELP etc you know the bands, anyway i wonder if you TBers can recommend some bands with a "signature" sound. I don't like bands that sound like others. Also recommended albums would be great too!

Thanks in advance!

King Crimson is a big one. Larks' Tongues in Aspic is my personal favorite, that along with Starless and Bible Black and Red are pretty much mandatory for any prog collection, but you can't really go wrong with these dudes.

Socrates Drank the Conium is a not-so-big one. On the Wings is INCREDIBLE, the drummer in particular is quite amazing. Hard to find stuff, but it is out there. The singer sounds like Eddie Vedder, but with more whisky and smoke.

+1 on the King Crimson. Of the pre-Tony Levin/Adrian Belew days Red is my favorite.

How about the Dixie Dregs? Are they considered progressive rock? On their newer stuff, Dave LaRue plays with them and does some amazing stuff.

I need to get some Magma, what I've heard is great.

Any particular place to start with them?

Some contemporary bands you might enjoy are Porcupine Tree (originally started as a joke, but turned out pretty good) and Spock's Beard.

XTC

It dosen't get much better. XTC albums to get: "Black Sea", "English Settlement", "Skylarking", "Oranges and Lemons", Non-such", "Dukes of Stratosphear: Chips from the Chocolate Fireball". And once you get done with that, fill in the other blanks with "White Music", "Drums and Wires", "Mummer", "The Big Express", "Rag and Bone Buffet", "Apple Venus Volumes I and II".

+1 Wonderfully musical bass lines from Colin Moulding. I would say start with either Skylarking or Nonesuch.

Like everyone mentioned, King Crimson...and Yes

I think Mars Volta is one of the new "old classics" after listening to them for a while now....truly an innovative band, and Omar's style has been compared to Robert Fripp's on numerous occasions..it took me years to get into them though - it happened at the same time I got into Crimson

I got into Crimson just recently, and can hear their influence on many many musicians..

"Red" happens to be the album that got Kurt Cobain into playing music, and he used it as a big influence on the album "In Utero"

Kurt called it The best rock album ever made.

I'm stretching the definition of prog a little, but check out Roxy Music's albums Siren and Avalon.
