Recommend me Zappa albums

I just watched "Zappa plays Zappa" DVD and was totally blown away by the music. Almost all songs have killer bass lines. I'm not familiar with Frank Zappa's music. Where should I start?

+1 to Sheik Yerbouti! A good collection is Joes Garage and Live in NY as well. But usually if it says Frank Zappa its amazing music

All of them! Must haves though are ', One Size Fits All, Joe's Garage, Sheik Yerbouti, the '88 tour albums, and The Yellow Shark (those who don't like chamber music can go jump off a duck! but in a nice, forum appropriate way).

That was in chronological order, btw.

There's a whole bunch of different Zappa eras and styles, it's hard to say which one(s) will do it for you. Apostrophe and Hot Rats are definitely good choices. I'd maybe add One Size Fits All.

oh! oh! .... and Filmore East '71 ... and the "Does Humor Belong In Music?" video ... and ...

His autobiography is actually a really good read and it will add a lot of context to the listening experience.

Avoid Lumpy Gravy for a while, though

Oh, and I almost forgot! "We're Only In It For the Money" with the Mothers of Invention... a classic from my elementary school days.

Watermelon in Easter Hay makes up for everything else, IMO.

Hot Rats won "Jazz Album of the Year" when it was released. It is a great album.

Overnight Sensation is another absolute classic.

"We're Only In It for the Money" and "Lumpy Gravy" and "Weasels Rip My Flesh" are classics from their era.

Good place to start IMO will be Apostrophe and Overnite sensation. Then you'll have a whole universe ahead of you that'll keep your head busy for a long time.
