Recommend a noob some techno/electronic music?

Sign in to disble this ad
So, this is a genre I've never really given a shot, but have always wanted to give it a go. When I hear some random electronic music in music videos or video games, sometimes I catch myself humming alot to it etc. I'll admit I actually like that "numa numa" song or whatever it's called

Any recommendations? I realize there are probably a zillion artists out there and probably some sub-genres...can someone give me a general outlook on what's there to listen to? Links to artists would be great too.

Google Ninja Tunes. It's record company that has a butt load of good artists worth checking out. Some of the people on that label:
Amon Tobin - Drum and bass weirdness
Kid Koala - Turntable wankery but in a good way
DJ Food - Mellow jazzy
Mr Scruff - Mellow jazzy
Herbalizer - Two producers/turntableists that use live musicians a lot - really funky.

You should also chech out the group Lamb. Its a brother and sixter duo she sings he programs things and hits buttons. It's a little on the mellow side but there is some really good double bass lines in a lot of their stuff. Check the album "Fear of Fours".

My friend is big on techno, here's a few bands he's like that have rubbed off on me:

Autechre (Very cool, do some odd stuff with time)
Infected Mushroom
Plaid
Aphex Twin (some ambient, some techno, some ambient techno)

The website's got that live-streaming whatchacallit

(their Monday-Thursday, midnite-4 am Jazz show ain't too shabby either)

Hmm, they're an odd one alright. Techemo is probably more like it

Good band though.

Leftfield and Underworld are my two favourite dance artists- both actual bands with actual songs. Leftfield's first album "Leftism" is stunning.

Aphex twin is good, but mad- possibly not the best introduction, unless you're a three legged alien with a penchant for dancing

The Chemical Bothers' first two albums (Exit Planet Dust and Dig Your Own Hole) are both pretty good as well.

stuff I like
four tet - ablums - 'rounds' or 'pause'
bonobo
boards of canada
mouse on mars
daft punk

there's a ton of electronic stuff out there.

if you're into more 'dancey/club/mainstream stuff then the people mentioned on j-bass-kreep's post are good examples (paul oakenfold etc)

if you like...um soundscape/experimental more down tempo/less dance
then there's
air
boards of canada
zero 7

techno
a lot artists on warp records. maybe a bit mad/experimental for a lot of people's tastes but there's
aphex twin
plaid
squarepusher
autechre

yeah Ninjatunes has a lot of decent artists on there as well for a bit more jazzy/laid back techno rather than warp's harder techno.

I'd recommend checking out Kruder & Dorfmeister. four tet is probably my favourite electronic artist though.

I'm a fan of BT. Sort of electronic music with some rock elements in there. ESCM and Still Life... are great albums.

Plus you can't go wrong with a guy whose initials are BT.

For a number of years I'd assumed that techno was primarily a European creation, but it had actually originated in Detroit in the mid 1980's. These gents are regarded as its the three godfathers of Detroit techno:

Derrick May:

Juan Atkins:
http://www.amazon.com/Legends-Vol-1-...e=UTF8&s=music

Kevin Sunderson:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...466990-2740850

These are compilations, so you may just want to search out the key tracks.

My girlfriend is much more into this stuff than I am, but this album:

is a frickin' masterpiece. Lifeforms by Future Sound of London, it is beyond amazing. The redux album is also called Lifeforms, and while it is pretty good, it is nowhere close the original. Dead Cities is another great one by them, as well as ISDN. Their remix/redux/rewhatever albums are great too, but only if you get really into them. The Isness sucks balls, what a severe disappointment.

Other good groups are VNV Nation, Depeche Mode, The Prodigy, Chemical Brothers, Aphex Twin, The Orb, Boards of Canada, Coil, Fatboy Slim, etc.

Ulrich - Rave of the Valkyrie Great happy hardcore techno mix, but I'm biased.

I like break beat hardcore, Dark Jungle, pre trance influence Happy Hardcore.

Techno is a huge genre. Listen to a lot of different stuff. If I had heard PVD, and Oakie first, I would have written techno off

For some great break beat house, check out my friend Mad Merc:

The New Deal is a cool trio - keys, bass, drums that plays techno. They're really good live if you ever get a chance.

For soulless (in a good way) Detroit electro check out "Adult", as well as other bands on their same record label.
For the best techno dance track of all time (IMO of course) check out "Tanz Mit Laibach" by Laibach.
