i'm gonna say Herbie hancock and the Headhunters, particularly the "Thrust" album. when i think funk, i think Paul Jackson. damn that guy is funky!

Maceo Parker's "Life On PLanet Groove" just does it for me. He's also probably the best concert I've ever been to. EVERYBODY in that place was grooving!

Get some Papa Grows Funk - all sick musicians....Russell Batiste Jr. on drums, Peter V. or Marc Pero on bass (highly underrated monsters), Jon Gros on keys, a guy that used to be in Galactic and June Yamagishi on guitar.
I have a live show of them doing one of the funkiest Yellow Moon's I've ever heard.
