You know, I'll just come out and say it: He's not one of my favorites.

Well, I meant Ray Brown in response to P Town's comment. But for the most part, Miles isn't in my "first reach for" bucket either. I'm more of the Mingus, Monk, Coltrane and the Hard Bop school ilk. Of course, I have great respect for the work of Mr. Brown and Mr. Davis, but I just like what I like, or should I say, I prefer what I prefer. There's cross-over between most of theser artists as well, so the lines are blurred.

Since we have similar tastes judging from your OP, I would say cop Joshua Redman's "Elastic" and "Momentum" album (amongst his others). He walks such a beautiful fine line between funk and jazz on those. I love that you cant really call it either one. I also dig alot of Freddie Hubbard. Check out his Red Clay album.

It seems to be that way whenever people try to pin down what genre anyone plays.

Man, I love me some Trane but I have have come to appreciate several other sax players just as much. Hank Mobley is one example of that as well as Tina Brooks, Sonny Stitt & Sonny Rollins. On trumpet, I hold Lee Morgan as high in importance as many place Miles Davis. Kenny Dorham's work is also good.

Here's a Kenny Dorham track with an appearance from Hank Mobley....

Afrodisia

I don't know those first two, but Herbie Hancock is amazing.

I've really been digging this band lately - The James Taylor Quartet. It's funk/jazz, or soul jazz, or something, whatever you call it, it Grooves with a capital G.
