The Drum,
www.the-drum.org.uk, has a free jazz jam every Sunday lunchtime - I have been meaning to go for the last couple of months. I move home this weekend tomorrow for the summer hols and will definitely check it out soon. I've no intention of playing, but just going to watch might be a good start for tapping into the "scene".
