I use a Roland R8 MkII. One of the best stand-alone units ever made. Discontinued in the wake of PC-based multi-tracking, far superior to any of the Roland/Boss stuff currently offered.

I have fooled many accomplished musicians and non-musicians into believing it was a real drummer. Extreme programmability and humanizing functions. I know this beast like the back of my hand, and I give it a personality.

And that's the trick to using any sequence/sample based rhythm programmer. It really depends upon your grasp of what real drummers can and would do in the real situation, and your ability to make your machine do it convincingly.

I haven't delved into PC-based rhythm programming, but I would guess it's got its advantages. Maybe some other posters can chime in here?

I have recorded a lot songs in my studio using a drum machines. If the song calls for a real drummer and the client can afford one I will bring in one. Machines I have used SR-16= good a bit thin. Hr16 = ok for the time. Oberheim DX =fat. roland R8= good. boss (blue color forgot model)= did not like sounds. Yamaha Motif is what I use now. It is funny how a synth has such good drums . Try loops in garage band or Addictive drums for plug ins. They sound great!
